**Fixing AVI files that only work in VDUB**
 

This post was written by sid4000 but since he's unable to provide an image of himself he's also unable to register here, that's why I'm posting this for him.

By using this guide, u acknowledge that u have moderate experience of the workings of the program VDUB.

Sometime when u dl avi file from dc or other p2p programs u may find that u cannot play a file u may experience the following outcomes;

a) video shows but there is NO audio EVEN after u have used divfix to re-index the file

b) exact opposite of a.

c) or both video or audio show HOWEVER when u skip forward or back the audio becomes out of sync with the video.

d) and finally if u skip forward or back in the avi the video frames become scrambled..

I have found all of these problems can be fixed using VDUB that only take 2 mins for the audio problems or under 50 mins for video problems.

The reasons why the above errors occur because audio\video stream has not been indexed to its counterpart stream i.e. audio --> video and video --> audio.


**Guide to Fixing Faulty Video and Audio Stream Problems**

Step 1: File -- > Open video file, TICK the option "Popup extended open options" open the faulty avi file....

Step 2: Once it has derived the keyframesNow an additional dialog box should appear, here tick the "Re-drive keyframe flags" option and click OK

*Re-drive keyframe flags options, basically re-indexes all the frames in the avi file*

If there is no index to the faulty avi file vdub will first create 1 for it now and then it will re-drive keyframe flags for the avi file which can TAKE around 40 mins for around 70,000 frames.

Step 3: Select the option, Video -- > Direct Stream Copy *do not want to re-encode an encoded file *

Step 4: By default the option, Audio --> AVI audio should be selected, so its is better to initially create the re-indexed video stream file with this option.

Step 5: So carry out File --> Save as AVI, to create an AVI file with a re-indexed video stream..

However on rare occasions the audio may not also be out of sync therefore carry out the folowing additional steps...

A. Generate a WAV file, File -- > Save WAV * save the wav to ur HDD *

B. Select this WAV file to re-apply the audio stream to wav file by Audio --> WAV audio.

Now carry out Step 5 and a new AVI will be created with a re-indexed audio and video stream.

p.s. this is NOT sure way procedure to fix audio or video stream problems BUT plz note other methods may exist with other software to fix these problems.

he can register... anyone can register again without giving a pic (or without me authorizing), and i send out a pm on registration which says ill delete them if they dont post and to give a pic if they have one

wow... so there are soooo complicated ways to do things *impressed* ^^
but seriously... there are some easy to find and easy to use free and shareware programs which fix avis in something like 1-2 minutes - just google something like "avi fix" or "avi fixed" and you get some...

it's quite nice to have an easy way to fix em when you (like me) often can't wait for an episode to finish, and allready want to watch it when it's only something like 80% done...

... allthough that allways worked for me, it might be that in some cases vdub does a more thorough job than these progs... but i'd allways check out the simple way first :)
