Why didn't anyone recommend the obvious? Get your source material in a better format!

The Real quality is probably too crappy to watch after editing, anyway. Also AMVs with remnants of hard fansubs are ugly. Of course, if you buy DVD you'll have to do your own de-interlacing.

I use Cucusoft's Ultimate DVD + Video Converter for all my video conversions, mostly because it works well and doesn't use all that many resources. Can with the ability to convert all my videos/DVDs to the right size for my Ipod touch :) Problem for some is that it costs money...60 bucks, but it's well worth the price, since it's convert practically anything into anything :)

Link for the curious: Ultimate DVD Converter, Video Converter, DVD + Video Converter Suite

I personally use Adobe Premier Pro CS4 and After Effects for editing, as for video converters.. I've found out that the best that has worked for me is Digital Media Converter, here's a video that I edited with Premier and then converted it with DMC so that you can uploaded to youtube and still have good quality after youtube converts it to flash... mmo mv

VirtualDub is a free video editing software which can accomplish just about any task for trimming and cleaning up videos. It also has a batch-processing functionality for processing large number of files. It also has a variety of features which include a choice of compression codecs, splitting and addition of audio tracls. The whole source code can also be acquired which is a plus.
