Defining japanese tags

This is to help define the anime & manga tags which are based on japanese terminology.





Abstract --- These are series which have art and/or plots which are very bizarre and often difficult to make any sense of. (In some cases, they aren't even intended to make any sense, merely to be expressive or interpretive.)

Androphobia --- Fear of men/boys. In anime/manga, series with this tag will typically have a main character who has a debilitating fear of men, to the point where she can't get too close to them, talk to them, and/or touch them.

CLAMP --- Anime related to various manga published by CLAMP.

Ecchi --- Has a lot of sexual situations, but no actual sex & little or no outright nudity.

Ga-nime --- Ga-nime are composed of a series of static pictures accompanied by music and speech. This "limited-anime" approach leaves behind the complex plot and characters found in most anime, and aims to stimulate the audience's imagination through various techniques such as the manipulation of time between each picture.

Ghibli Museum Shorts --- Short Ghibli films, which were shown exclusively at the Ghibli museum.

Gynophobia --- Fear of girls/women. In anime/manga, series with this tag will typically have a main character who has a debilitating fear of women, to the point where he can't get too close to them, talk to them, and/or touch them.

Josei --- Anime/manga targetted to women.

Journey to the West --- Series based on the old legend.

Magical Girl --- Series about ordinary girls who gain special powers through a magical transformation.

Mecha --- Giant robots, with human pilots.

Minna no Uta --- Literally Everyone's Songs, is a five minute NHK TV and radio program broadcasting several times daily since 1961. The program is generally used as filler at the end of regular television programs.

Moe --- Super-cute characters, usually childlike in appearance.

noitaminA --- Series which have been in a specific programming block (of the same name). These series tend to be more refined than the standard shounen fare that you see elsewhere.

Omake --- These are little extra bits. They are typically short, have no bearing on the main story, and frequently break the fourth wall by talking directly to the audience and/or depicting the author as a character.

Otaku Culture --- Otaku means something like "obsessive fan". Otaku culture series are stories based on the culture surrounding anime & manga fandom.

Seinen --- Series targetted at men.

Shinigami --- Japanese grim reapers. They lead the souls of the dead to the afterlife, make sure that wicked souls get sent to hell, etc.

Shinto --- A traditional Japanese religion, based on spirit worship.

Shoujo --- Targetted at young girls.

Shoujo-ai --- "Girl love", series about romantic relations between females. Doesn't include graphic sex, although may include implied sex.

Shounen --- Targetted at young boys.

Shounen-ai --- "Boy love", series about romantic relations between males. Doesn't include graphic sex, although may include implied sex.

Tsundere --- Characters (usually female) who are rough & mean on the surface, but who are sweet & kind underneath.

World Masterpiece Theater --- An anthology series which featured classic books & stories.

Yandere --- Characters (usually female) who are sweet & kind on the surface, but sinister underneath.

Yaoi --- Sexual relations between males. This is superficially similar to shounen-ai, but is generally more explicit.

Yuri --- Sexual relations between females. This is generally a stronger form of shoujo-ai, but the two are often used interchangeably.



These terms only apply to manga.


4-koma --- A comic format where gags are told in an arrangement of four panels.

Manhwa --- The korean version of manga, it reads from left to right.

Manhua --- The chinese version of manga, it also reads from left to right.
