Learn IRC. That'll be your "learning how to crawl" on your path to learning how to drive (yes, it's that basic of a skill). Then, learn to ask groups on IRC who need help. And if you want to go solo, good luck doing the raw editing, timing, translating, etc on your own if you've never done any fansubbing work before. I really wouldn't even know how to advise you since you don't even seem to have any experience or idea. Just go find a group in need of help and hope they'll be nice enough to give a complete noob a go. I wouldn't pester the more established and/or proliferative groups though (eclipse, SHS, the-triad, ayu, etc). They might kick you.

Your best bet is to start out at editing or editing QC. However, those two positions require you to have an excellent grasp of the English language, and the ability to spot errors and to correct them. But, uhm, based on your post, that may not be the best way to learn.

The second route is through timing. Learn how to use Aegisub and how to time scripts to video and audio. However, you'll need to find groups that are willing to take on newbies and to walk them through the process of learning, etc. They won't take your hand through every single step, though. Most of the initiative has to be from you.

Sites like http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=6497 and http://fansubbers.org/index.php/Recruitlist/Recruitlist should give a good idea who needs help and if they're willing to take on new people

Sorry if I sounded like an ass. Caught me as I was passing out from sleep deprivation. The thing is though, I've never seen anyone who wanted in without some useful skills already (granted, I don't see as many as the groups do since my tenure was horridly short), so I don't know what you can do if you say you've no skills, nor did I know, like chaos, of a FAQ out there. If worse comes to worse, you can always distro. That requires no skill, and is always in need. But you have to know IRC. That's where all the groups talk. Think of it as an immigrant wanting to become a senator. You don't need English to "function" as a senator, but the English is the media in which all work is taking place. IRC is like that. Knowing it isn't a fansubbing skill, it's the media to speak to fansubbers.

A few guides on some of the positions in fansubbing:

http://fansubbers.org/index.php/KB/KB

It's best to experiment with some of this stuff first and know what goes on with the position, as well as understanding the lingo/jargon and what needs to be/should be done, before looking to work in a group. It'll generally save you a lot of your time as well as other people's when you know what you're doing.

Why would I lock this thread. Everything appears on topic. We're not anti-fansubbing, we just don't want links pointing to Torrent sites.

i see,.. well its that i thought that this topic was already done thats all.

well in that case i believe that u would need to be very fluent in Japanese so that your translation would be accurate. thats the only thing i know about fan subbing.

check Subtitle Workshop to start subbing, it will give you the ability to oben a movie file and start adding subtitles to it. after you finish subs you will need encoding application like VirtualDub, you may search for "how to add subtitles to movies", and I think you will get good to start tutorials.
I'll be glad to help, if you like,
Regards ;)

I am glad that this topic appeared on A-P, because I want to create subtitles too..I want to translate english subtitles to my language..for those who don't know english..I want to create simple subtitle file to free download..but I don't know how exactly..

once, I downloaded chinese practise and then english subtitle file (txt), so it was easy..I just re-wrote english to czech..the timing was already there..

but as for anime, the english subtitles are usually put in the video..how can I do the timing?
just stop the video, play, stop and play...???
