Fairly simple - sometimes you go into an anime thinking it will be a certain way, and it turns out to be quite different - whether it be in terms of overall genre, or some particular aspect like amount of action, maturity, ecchi level, etc. Which examples come to your mind?

Happy Voting ^_^

More often than not, an anime will use events that happened prior to the main story as a building point - whether it be for character development, extra dramatic effect, a more complex plot, or other puroses. Things like old folklore, or a character's personal history, a past war, some specific event(s), etc. Which anime come to mind that did the best job in this area, either by the past history itself being interesting, or by making the best use of it in the present? Sequels should probably be left out here, unless they have a past beyond things that happened in (or were presented in) the prequel.
The idea here is, what mecha series, regardless of their actual quality, had a take on giant robots that you liked more than others? Whether it be because you thought the mechs simply looked cool, or based on details about the way they're handled, or how they fight, etc. Remember, it's not so much about the anime as a whole, as it is about the mechs that are in them. Could be interesting to see what comes out.
