I haven`t had a handheld system since the GameBoy Colour, which I didn`t play much. The last console I bought was a PS2 around 2000. But a current roomate has a PSP (first time I saw one) and I can`t help eyeing it enviously.
I was thinking about picking up a 3DS. Do I go for it, and if I do what is the must-have DS stuff I should be looking up? Do I go for it or not get suckered in by hype and momentary whim? No point in getting a PSP since it will be superceeded by the end of the year - should I be waiting for that, what do you think?

I'm not even considering getting it until after the 26th. That's when it comes out in Japan. I want to hear how good it is first. The battery life is supposed to be terrible (3-5 hours). The launch titles don't good to me. Basically I would only get Street Fighter IV and the
edit: looks like Blazblue isn't coming out at launch. Last edited by Garyuu; 02-22-2011 at 09:54 AM. |

Not interested even remotely. I hate handhelds and there's nothing unique on the system that interests me at all so far.
I would recommend you don't consider buying the system unless you find a number of launch titles you like. As for DS games... I don't really know, it depends on what styles of games you enjoy. This is my general advice for ANY game system whatsoever. Do some research, make a list and when you've finally established that you know you want several games on it, THEN go buy one. Don't jump on the early adopter bandwagon and waste your money without a plan. That said, if you can tell us what style of games you enjoy, people can give recommendations, which you should then research for yourself to make sure you'd actually enjoy them. Last time I enjoyed a handheld system was the GBA, as I was a MegaMan Battlenetwork addict. I bought the DS at launch and don't have a single game I bother playing on it outside of Bomberman occasionally, so that was a waste of $150 for me. Granted, there are titles, I just got tired of waiting for anything useful to come out as the launch was ridiculously slow. The big game I bought it for was Metroid Prime Hunters, which didn't come out for MONTHS after launch because they pushed it back and when it was finally released it sucked, and I was very annoyed. One thing I don't particularly like about the 3DS so far is that they seem to be re-releasing a lot of older games that were on past consoles or some that are even current. Which I would personally never buy as I'd much rather play the game on a REAL system where I don't have to stare at a tiny screen that gives me neck strain and listen to tinny little crap speakers. |

The 3DS has launched in Japan. I hear that a lot of people are having problems with it. It seems like it is causing people eye pain, with some as quick as five minutes. Nintendo has said that when using 3D people should take fifteen minute breaks every half hour. That seems kind of ridiculous to me. Who knows what the total percentage of people having problems are.

Last I heard about the 3DS is that Nintendo was supposed to be re-vamping the 3D aspect to stop that eye pain that people are having when they play it. As far as the battery life, yeah that is a real bad trade-off seeing as i'm a person that never sits still, so i'll never be finishing a game if the battery life is 3+ hrs.

Just get the regular DS.
-Stability -Lots of games -Usually pretty cheap nowadays And if you do then you have to check out the Legend of Zelda games, Some of the mario RPG ones, maybe a pokemon or two, and if your lucky enough to stumble across Izuna (forgot the rest of the name, there's two games) you should give that one a shot :) Nintendo franchises for the win! |

Pretty sure the DS XL is about the same size, or even bigger :)
And yeah, just to not make this spam, I talked to my friends at Uni who tried out the 3DS. They said it was horrible. The 3D thing only KINDA worked at this one special angle, and they could only look at it for 15 minutes before starting to get headaches. I think just look at the normal DS. Doesn't look like they're going to go out of fashion any time soon, what with this 3DS heading for what I can only see as being a failure :) |
