Default Akira Live Action (2011)

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but -

UK, September 8, 2009 - In June, we rather depressingly reported that the live-action Akira adaptation was "dead as a doornail."

Well it seems the project has now been resuscitated, with Collider (quoting a "trusted source") reporting that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby -- who helped write Children of Men and Iron Man -- are about to turn in a version of the script. Apparently the reason we've heard so little about the movie is because the pair have been laboring to get the screenplay just right.

They also report that if studio Warner Bros. likes the script, Akira will go into production next year, in time for a 2011 release.

The flick is still set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan and will feature the iconic motorcycle. It is not confirmed yet whether teddy bears crying milk will also be involved.

This news hasn't yet been confirmed by the studio.

Sounds like a train wreck.

I cant really say much for the Iron Man movie, but Children of Men was an awesome post apocalyptic movie, so they have the experience, at least dealing with post apocalyptic genres.

I liked Children of Men a lot and Iron Man was fun. Last I heard, the Akira movie was going to be based on the manga (making a trilogy or something) as opposed to the anime and that the two stories are very different. I wonder if that's still true. I've been meaning to read the Akira manga, but haven't yet. Manhattan, huh? Does that mean that the movie won't be called Akira or what? I vote for Phil- spooky.

I also heard that the live action Akira was going to be based more on the Manga than the anime, and that it was going to be a 2-parter. This really got me excited, but then when you realize that its set in "Neo Manhattan" and may very well get rid of the oh-so-foreign name Akira, one must wonder what other "creative liberties" they're gonna take with this story. Oh well, hope its good either way.

If you liked the movie, then you definitely need to read the manga. It is so much better than the anime.

The manga is such a in depth story with a real end. I agree with DavidSeth.

Anyhow, so if these guys are doing it, maybe it will be less a hollywood blockbuster popcorn movie?

Like if they lean more to Children than Iron?

Neo Manhattan!? LOL This could go really bad. Why is it that they rarely get right in hollywood when its Anime? I wish James Cameron would stop just talking about how much he loves Battle Angel Alita and would actually do the movie already, Avatar looks like pocahontas in space.

In a post-apocolyptic future Neo-Manhattan, one rebel is going against all odds to save the world.

AKIRA, coming to a movie theatre near you.

Ugh, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

they should make an anime out of it. you know, a series (that covers the whole plot for once), not another movie.

That would be great. Though I would expect at the least the same attention to detail and hope for even better. That and the same folks doing the music, Geinō Yamashirogumi with Shoji Yamashiro composing/conducting. Or at least something very similar. I think something like Akira needs that over whelming sensation you get from such music.

Anyways, I don't see this being much good. It would be nice if it was, and I'm sure it'll look pretty, but I'm pretty damn doubtful of any thing else.
