Cats Don't Dance

Just saw it for the first time in like 6 years, and I still love it. It's a really great animated musical that beats the buttocks out of most other in it's genre. Doesn't go as high as like The Lion King though.

Yeah, that's certainly one of the best dystopian films I can think of.

I had the misfortune of going to see Forbidden Kingdom last week. I can see why Jet Li and Jackie Chan agreed to be in it, presumably b/c of the films depiction of key elements from Journey to the West, but I was incredibly annoyed by the caricatural Bostonians. And the protagonist was a total douche. Not only was he a douche, but he GROWS A FUCKING MULLET in the middle of the damn movie, thus making him even more of a douche. The story was predictable, the characters were thin, and the dialog was horrible.

Aside from that, the movie does have some decent points. Primarily among these is the fight scene between Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Also, it's nice to see something so deeply rooted in East Asian culture at the theater. My rating, however is: 1.5/5

I went to see Street Kings at teh cinema on Wednesday. It was pretty entertaining I have to say, even though the ending was pretty predictable. Keanu Reeves was better than I expected (he's usually a painful actor to watch), though Forest Whitaker, particularly after his excellent performance in The Last King of Scotland, was rather disappointing. Like the film, it tended to stray into ridicululously OTT territory on occasion. On the whole, though, I thought it was a pretty good film. A solid portrayal of criminality and police corruption, refreshingly devoid of "good guys" for a Hollywood film.

I just saw "El Orfanto" (the Orphanage), a Spanish horror movie about a haunted ex-orphanage. The end was pretty tame, but the movie looked great and I was legitimately nervous-to-scared several times. Though this is one of those 'does a little kid see something adults don't?!' movies (that's on the dvd description not a spoiler), which I usually dislike, this one was pretty good. With so many non-scary torture-porn flcks passing as horror movies today, it was refreshing to see something that scares by Not showing everything.

I just saw Pan's Labyrinth which has become one of my favourite movies. Normally I don't like films with child actors (either too cutesy, or can't convey the proper emotion required of them), but this girl was brilliant. When I see great acting from a kid, it's very inspiring to watch. Anyway, good movie.

Ivana Baquero was extremely good in that film, though the whole cast were great. It's one of my favourite films, too.

Ah yep, that's right, that was her name. Someone to keep an eye out for in future, methinks.
