Imperishable Night is probably the easiest of the Touhou games. Probably the one with the best story too (not that the games have much of a story to begin with). It has the highest collection of the most interesting and recurrent characters in the Touhou universe (MOKOU!!) and fandom so it's probably a good choice to begin with. The only major players in the Touhou universe that aren't in IN are the drunken loli oni, ⑨, and the peeping tom.

Touhou is more about the pretty designs and music really.

Well, you might be pleased to note I have started Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil. (Because I love playing things in order, and hate PC-98 emulators.)

That shadow art video made me do it. xD

You've met some of the characters in Are you as whimpy as the old fart r-18?

Honestly though, other than Flandre's fight, EoSD wasn't all that great imo. It did bring a LOT of key recurring characters like Sakuya, Meiling, Remi, and Flan though. My favorite Touhou games are in that sig of mine . . . somewhere in there . . .

Is it strange that I find the stories really interesting? :P

EoSD is probably my second favorite Touhou game. It feels nice to play, the music is awesome (Just think of Septette for the Dead Princess, Locked Girl, Beloved Tomboyish Girl, U.N Owen, Centennial Festival for Magical Girls, Eastern Dream...) Except it is also the one that stresses me the most (and I kind of like that :P). But yeah the fight with Flandre is really something *still shivers when hearing U.N Owen*

I pick my favorite Touhou games mainly on how nice the patterns are and music, which is why IN and MoF are up there. MoF I still find is the prettiest and most visually pleasing to play while having some excellent music. IN has great music and has one of the few storylines I'm interested in and well as being quite visually pleasing as well. MS has Yuka, Mima, Shinki, Alice, and Yumeko, which is more than enough to win its place. Plus it is by far the easiest PC-98 game to see what is going on in (besides HRtP). And you can probably guess why IaMP and SWR are where they are.

That's why PCB is my favorite. I agree that EoSD doesn't have the prettiest patterns but the feeling it gives makes me place it in second; it's the one I played the most overall and the first one I cleared without "cheating" (ah the MarisaB bug in MoF....)

Yeah MoF is very pretty and has a great atmosphere around it (especially these days it feels like it's the perfect time to play :P) Music is fitting but as standalone tracks I'm not much of a fan

Personnaly I found LLS to be easier. Reason: cleared normal on second try when I got my gamepad to work properly and configured the emulator to remove frame skip. I keep trying to clear MS but I still fail... Maybe Shinki is too awesome for me XD

I meant MS is the easiest to SEE what is going on; the other PC-98's (besides HRtP) background makes it even harder to see bullets.

Just started EoSD on normal with Marisa B and well... On the plus side: I reached the final boss in my first serious go, on the downside, I set the number of lives on 5 and used up all the continues T_T Takes time to get used to having no panic bombbutton once you get hit by something like you have with IN... I actually have to pay much more attention to potential fuckups to bomb prior to impact in this game :P

It's good to learn to bomb before the Last Spell goes into effect anyway; it's a lot less costly.

Makes me remember one time when I was playing TWINS (another great shooter series) and got to the last level, had a ton of bombs available, and lost it all cuz I didn't trigger in time.

The allowed reaction time to save yourself with a bomb in EoSD is about 0.1 second I think and it's one of the shortest reaction time... So yeah learning to bomb before getting hit is a good idea :P That goes for IN too like purple said
