Condensing the MGS series into 2 hours? That's easy, just cut out all the unnecessary codec conversations, all the repetitive backtracking, reduce the obnoxiously long and painfully slow boss fights to something quick, exciting and interesting and assume we know Snake is good at sneaking, don't have to show him hiding under a table for ten minutes figuring out the guards paths... in fact, just assume we understand he sneaks everywhere because watching someone sneak is incredibly boring.
Most of the MGS story is made up of REALLY, REALLY unnecessary, pointless, bone for the idle enthusiast stuff. The story in the first MGS is painfully childish and formulaic. You have the protagonist, love interest, comedic sidekick, villain, twist, conspiracy, a formula Hollywood has been abusing for aaaaages. You can easily condense MG1 and MGS1, 3 (and all other Big Boss related material I haven't played), 4 into a single movie with some quick changes. Shadow Moses is act 1 with flashbacks to the first Metal Gear, 2nd Act goes deeper into explaining Big Boss and how things lead up to this mixed in with MGS4's plot followed by the resolution aka ending of MGS4. Cut out Raiden (no time and he's very much not essential to the plot and the plot of MGS2 can easily be skimmed over and explained either during the climax of Act 1 or during Act 2 but Act 1 preferably), tone down the love between Snake and Meryl, most of the Codec-only characters won't be necessary because we can assume Snake is a bad ass and the game doesn't need to explain how to use items or save the game and cut down the boss fights to maybe one or two memorable ones and there you go.

^I doubt they'll be condensing the series, or even making a film of one of the games. They will likely come up with a new mission just for the movie which will fit within the timeframe.
@riotranger, there's an MGS database you can download w/ MGS4 that has tons of that stuff in it if you wanted to get into the nitty gritty of the lore. |

I prefer playing Metal Gear to watching a movie about it (considering that some of these games are already movies with interactive bits thrown in). Also, how many more stories are there that they can come up with? Now we have Ground Zeroes (which looks like a sequel to Peace Walker) in the making and Kojima is still talking about a possible Metal Gear set during WWII with The Boss and the Cobra Unit.
Oh well, at least Kojima himself is involved in the project. No mention of Uwe Boll and Paul W. Anderson anywhere either. That means we're off to a good start, right? If they make it a stand-alone mission and don't alienate casual moviegoers with too much background information and senseless character cameos every two seconds it could work, I guess. |
