I think one of favorite albums from this year I think most people might not of have heard of, is Bloodshot Dawn's first full length album.

Speaking of alestorm, has anyone heard their version of "You are a pirate"?
What is your opinion on doom? It's not intense, but unlike power and hair metal, it does have a really dark sound to it.

Yep. I have that Alestorm album. I'm not big into power metal, but I think Alestorm and Powerwolf are fun.

i usually listen to an album ( if it is good ) for 6-7 months so i cant say i have listened all their albums ! only :
Sumerian Daemons - 2003
Communion - 2008
and The Great Mass - 2011

\m/

Their other albums are pretty different I think. There aren't any orchestral parts, and has a more old school sound. It took me a while to get into them. When I got into death metal, I listened to only new stuff. It really took me a while to get into the style and production of older bands. Still, they are great.

re doom metal: Dunno, I haven't encountered more than 1 or 2 songs (at least that I'm aware of).

One unusual metal band I recently encountered is Van Canto. What makes these guys so interesting is that they're an a capella metal band. The only instrument they use is a drum, beyond that they actually sing the instruments.
Check out this song: VAN CANTO - Primo Victoria feat. Joakim Brodén (Sabaton) | Napalm Records - YouTube

Finally the metal fans on A-P unite \m/

Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Metallica were the first metal bands I listened to (7-8 years ago or so). Iron Maiden, Diamond Head and many other NWOBHM bands came after that and very soon I found speed/thrash.

I just love thrash metal. I love its rawness, the lyrical themes and the hardcore punk influence. Also, thrash metal spawned many of the other metal subgenres like death/black/groove. I also enjoy a lot of sludge/stoner/doom metal like Kyuss, Blood Farmers, Acid King and Orange Goblin.

Some of my favorite speed/thrash bands include:

- Exodus
- Annihilator
- Megadeth
- Coroner
- Evildead
- Forbidden
- Slayer
- Voivod
- Kreator
- Destruction
- Anthrax
- Nuclear Assault
- Death Angel
- Evile
- Warbringer
- Municipal Waste
- Dr. Living Dead

I only recently discovered a band called Vektor. Vektor basically is what happens when you throw Voivod and Death in a blender. The vocalist sounds like a freakin' banshee.

'Deoxyribonucleic Acid'
'Asteroid'
'Dying World'
Funari likes this.

The great mass also has the orchestral parts you are talking about ... it was a reason that i loved it !

Another unusual song I've encountered is Power Quest - Cemetery Gates - YouTube It's an odd mix of speed metal with what sounds like 8-bit castlevania music.

Slovak Melodic Black/Doom/Heavy Metal

-Tolkien Themed-

This is one of those bands that saddens me to no end to know they split-up back in 2003.
They released 2 albums and right after the release of their second album, they disbanded, never to be heard from again.
And being that they split, they no longer have an official homepage, nor do they have an official Myspace.

Anyone up for some Funeral doom metal? AHAB from Munich, Germany cleverly combines slow and crushing riffs with growling/choir vocals. Their lyrical themes include Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick', the ocean, whale hunting, the Essex and Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket'. The members of AHAB jokingly refer to their music as 'Nautik Funeral Doom' or 'Whalecore'.

'Old Thunder'
'The Hunt'
'Tombstone Carousel'
'Aeons Elapse'

Their new album 'The Giant' is a doom metal masterpiece.

Oh, yes. Got into metal through Iron Maiden at first and while it'll always have a special significance to me, I've drifted mostly onto thrash/death/melodeath with some prog and power bands here and there. The faster, the better, usually. Took a little while to get used to the vocals, though. Some of my favorites would be Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Death Angel, Dew-Scented, The Crown, The Haunted... for less thrashy bands, Bolt Thrower, Evergrey, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Dismember, Edge of Sanity... Death has some nice stuff too.

As for recommendations, I'll... not start with my own country, actually, let's start with Artas. I believe they're Austrian. First heard their rendition of "Gangster's Paradise", which got me instantly hooked despite sounding like a fairly absurd premise, and looked for more. They offer my favorite combination of vocals that don't sound overtly brutal but simply blasting instruments.

Artas - Fortress of No Hope (HQ) - YouTube
