Is it just me or has a prior relationship between the Queen and Arata not been touched on yet? Having trouble remembering from last season (though Arata wasn't in competition that time around) but I don't think we've had any mention that they've even met before now, have we?

I watched the first three back to back, and I find it visually great, I just hope that the new additions to the 'rival fest' don't flop in the mud, or turn out as predictably as I fear the setup may be hinting at...

^Interesting catch. We've seen few details of Arata's time in exile, so I'm fine with this being introduced now, as long as it's not something banal like [speculation]

The Queen was smitten with Arata, he rejected her, and that's why she binged on ice cream for a year.

Good lord, even more fluff thrown into the love triangle mix. Any resolution is going to make or break this anime after such a tremendous build up.

Episode 2 made me fall in love with Kana quite a bit.

episodes 1 - 3..... i like. new girl seems like she will grow on me, new guy seems he will take a loooooooooooooooooong time to grow on me, and Desk-kun: Bad Ass Tactician!

the queen has a crush on Arata??? i wonder if she knew him before Arata moved to Tokyo or after? ohhhhh plot thickening!!!!

ep4 - a little slow, but still a good one IMO...

This was focused on the karuta game play, but let's face it, at least half the show is about the psychology of competitive sports. Anyway, I liked the way both Chihaya and Taichi had to win their internal battles - Chihaya to shrug off the trash-talking proposition of her opponent, and Taichi to first trust his teammates to handle their own battles (especially Chihaya), and second to believe in himself. Mental toughness FTW. Also like the byplay - the gamesmanship of Tsugobuchi, Sumire realizing that Chihaya is more aware of Taichi then she thought, and Dr. Harada fretting over his protege.
Also some interesting insights into Arata's family background - his father's attitude explains a lot.

good move by sumire to scout, being a team player and all and finding her place in the team. also,

kind of nice to see the other team's coach grow from that "screw up" to a respectable leader. sometimes you need other people relying on you to make you a better person.

i forgot how fast these episodes move by.... when they finished the match i thought we were just going to commercial.

^Yeah, by "slow" I meant the ratio of screen time to real time ... maybe 3 hours elapsed time? but completely engrossing.

About the other coach:

It's great that he inspired the kids to compete and believe in themselves. However, I would hope the rules of karuta or similar sports allow for a judge to disqualify a player for unsportsmanlike conduct. Pretending to hit on a female opponent is a low-class tactic ... although it's far better for Chihaya to be able to handle it than to go to pieces.
