JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)
Synopsis, screenshots, recommendations ~ Add Recommendations Discuss individual episodes and first impressions of this anime here; reviews and final impressions should be posted in the Anime Reviews Forum. Post format and full rules can be found here. __________________________________________ That first episode was just all kinds of stupid cheesy fun and I loved every second of it. This is some real old school anime stuff right here. Over the top manly action with just a hint of homoeroticism. I haven't read the manga but I've seen both sets of the OVAs, those look like they were taking place more in the middle of the story, but this new series looks like an origin story. Not that the setting really matters. It's all about the characters as they grow up and become bitter enemies. Dio is so obviously evil just from his appearance. It's so funny how he fools anyone into thinking, he's anything but a villain. However, he has a charisma that pulls out the darkness in people's hearts which is how he has such a large gathering. JoJo is just the opposite. Almost too good to be believable. But this isn't an anime about nuance. It's a pure battle between good and evil between huge muscular men that are so manly they seem like parodies. I can definitely see this won't be to everyone's taste but for me it's just too much fun to pass up. This whole episode had me smiling and laughing out loud at how absurd it was, but the anime is in on the joke and they've intentionally made it as over the top as possible and god bless them for it because it is glorious. Everything about this story is so old school. It really brings back memories of Fist of the North Star and other older titles. The characters can't get anymore over the top and they are always so sincere when delivering even the silliest of lines. |

I liked the first episode well enough. It was a good and faithful adaptation of the manga (which also starts out in a boring manner). The characters' faces lost some of their fabulousness in the transition from manga to anime, which is a shame. Well. at least the colouring was appropriately fabulous and, I suspect, anachronistic. Anyway, this was just an establishing episode, the real cheesiness starts in the next one, and I for one am looking forward to it. Just hope they'll keep the gore (the manga started back when people died in Shounen Jump).
Roundabout by Yes was an unexpected choice for an ED, but the song is awesome so who the fuck cares? It's even kind of fabulous when when placed in this context. I wonder if Araki had something to do with that, he really seem to love his classic rock. Well, it is a Shounen Jump manga from 1987. I think subtlety was a bad thing back then... |

Really enjoyed the first episode. It's pretty faithful to the manga so far, with only a few minor changes. I'm also glad this anime is moving quite quickly (The first episode covered over half the first volume.)
Looking forward to the next episode. |

Weird but fast paced and with lots of strange humor and action. Good enough for me to watch the next episode.

I had a hard time getting through the first episode. I usually try to watch the first two episodes of a series before I decide if it's not for me, or it sucks, but by the end of the third episode, I've kinda gotten into it. Now that I read most of the overkill is intentional, it's pretty good.
