Yes lots of ‘serious’ anime use humour. But humour isn’t some kind of necessity for ‘serious’ shows to work full stop, such a claim is ludicrous. Yes the premise is absurd in that ‘wow, as if this would ever happen in real life!’ But then that goes for premises of many an anime series. I mean, what the hell.

I think the dark and gritty tone works fine with the concept

that ‘sweet Jesus I’m playing out a video game in real life ABOUT SHOOTING AND KILLING PEOPLE.’ Yes its been kinda done before, but so what. If may bring something new and interesting whilst being entertaining at the same time, which is what I’m hoping for.

Perhaps if it was ‘sweet Jesus I’m stuck in Super Mario World’, a lighthearted tone would be more appropriate?

I don’t think that if the show does not highlight its own absurdity, that is its death knell. I don’t get why is this is such an important criteria, its a major call to make so early on after the first episode.

And I can name a ton of them that fell flat on their face for having "comedic" moments. It's not necessary. I didn't realize that this "genre" required it. I saw it listed as: Action, Psychological, Science Fiction, Seinen, Tragedy.

And looking at the opening (which rocks by the way) I can see a couple of characters that might add a little comic relief. And who knows, it's the intro episode.

Besides, I hear the manga is pretty dark stuff.

I'm sold... this show is probably the most interesting out of all new airings, with such a lovely premise it is bound to be at least worthwhile. I hope that it gets better becuase I heard some good stuff about the manga, not to mention that I see a lot of potential, maybe they are just bombs but it could as well be better made than most recent virtual world anime (in which the system is not that good), even though this is not the virtual world... we shall see. This may not be something original (far from that), but I see a quite diferent 'dark-ish' aproach (nothing unseen) so I'm satisfied, Haruhi knows this kind of anime suits me the best...

I can see that people here can relate to MC, well so can I, some seen aspect of him are my every day life. He is actually quite interesting IMO, I liked the way he didn't question his morals for too long, being 22 has some advantages I guess, it could be that I am amazed by adolescent protagonist or it was all tities in last minute... and we could actually get some romance between older guy and high school cleavage...

About adding comedy... da fuck....

Episode 1

The opening scene is just a bunch of guys effortlessly killing others... as a game. No excitement without some danger.

The opening video shows a Greek at 7th place, lol. (my country)

Oh another show about antisocial videogamers, hm, ok it starts to lose its appeal from making too much of it.

Oh look, the animated version of Predators.

You know, when a bomb explodes right next to you, something happens to you even if you do a flip. From the noise, the shrapnel, the shock wave, etc. Nothing happened to this guy so the otherwise "real" death game loses its appeal five seconds after it is introduced.

The guy he was fighting has the worst aimming in the world if he misses a sitting target three times.

Really, he realized what the timer does AFTER ALL THAT? Top player material right there.

Don't those bombs have a bleep sound? That enemy was besides a lousy thrower, also half deaf.

Damn, those walls must be made of ricepaper if a plastic controller can break them like that.

Dumb fun but nothing good.

episode 1... i'm not a video game player, so the appeal may be lost on me. was not into it, do not care for how the concept is being played out, i think i'm done with this one; just not for me.

First episode was pretty alright. Interesting concept focusing solely on bombs; I could see how some would think it'd be limiting, but I'd say its manga's doing well enough with it that people thought it warranted an anime.
The MC does seem like a bit of a douche, but I'm sure he'll mature into a likable character as the series goes on.

Also, this has the best opening amongst Fall's selection so far, alongside Zetsuen IMO.
