This anime's got top-notch animation, that's for sure. I was really amazed with those skateboarding segments.
On an interesting side-note, this anime was kind of what I initially expected when I first saw Arcana Famiglia .__.

Positives
Great production values, fluent animation Some weird premise about kings, kids with superpowers, and murder Negatives The background music was weak Very little happened Neutral Totally like Durarara I will follow this, although there is a high probability it will be just mindless fun and not anything great in terms of plot or characterization. Meaning, Durarara mark 2. |

Episode 1:
This is one of those shows that's hard to judge from the first episode. Objectively, not much happened with the plot and characters to the point where we really don't have any idea what is going on. However, the whole thing had this energy that made it a blast to watch. Even as I had no idea why people were fighting or Shiro was being chased, I was absorbed in the visuals and the smooth animation. That skateboard chase looked cool as hell. This show could end up being terrible but the strong Durarara vibes give me hope that it's going to be great. The atmosphere crackles with energy, everything looks beautiful and even when not much is happening things are still moving along. Even if the middle segment wasn't as exciting as the rest it didn't linger for too long and gave a bit of a breather between the first and last act set pieces. All in all this show excites me. I know everything could go wrong, but if it goes right this could be completely awesome. And even if it does go wrong I can enjoy the eye candy, and no matter what I will always remember this sit up and take notice first episode. |

All spectacle no substance. Reminded me of an OVA, in that they dumped all the money to make it look great but forgot to hire a writer to actually explain what was going all.

^ Yeah, but it's not an OVA. As long as they start to explain in the next few episodes then it'll all be good. Besides there were some hints at the story in the first episode and this gives it a mysterious vibe that makes me want to come back for more. I don't see anything wrong with pushing the eye candy to get viewers hooked. Especially when they make something that looks this good on a TV budget and a stacked VA cast.
I mean yeah, it's hard to gauge where it will go from here and the wheels could certainly fall off the cart starting with the next episode. However, I don't really think it was quite without substance. They could have slowed down to explain things but instead they just dropped hints here and there. What I'm hoping is that this will all connect up eventually. |

Episode 1.
Lots of flair and some great direction which fully exploits the beautiful setting was the definite highlight for me. But the schizophrenic introduction of the characters, and but minor allusions to the overall set-up Reminded me a lot Guilty Crown which is a bad thing; with lots of style, but little substance. I’ll give it a few episodes.
