also, how does that system even interpret signals? how does it account for personal likes and dislikes - let's say purely for argument's sake that 50% of the world's population finds having their stomach touched pleasurable and the other 50% is made uncomfortable by it. how does the system transmit what you're experiencing to you? is it re-interpreted by your own nervous system when the signal is received? if not, is everyone just getting some kind of generic 'creator's best guess' response to every tactile sensation? even for really intimate and personal forms of contact? how would such a set of responses even be determined - would someone have to sit down and map specific signal types to every part of the body or what? what about the massive sensational change minute differences in, say, different levels of pressure with a touch can accomplish?

The helmet on the other hand isn't just reading the signals, it's also implanting it's own for pain touch and whatnot.

Don't forget that kirito had his stats transferred from SAO, so he's rather overpowered now, probably one of the strongest if not the sole strongest person in the game.

on the other hand, i don't think getting a bit bigger and stronger is nothing special compared to strong long range attacks he had to deal with. also, we don't really know how powerful are high level mages - maybe they have some strong AOE attacks to which that silly monster wouldn't really compare..

You cannot roll as another race. Thus knowing what's available to another race isn't easy at all. On top of this there's heavy racism in this game.

Stating Spriggans can only do illusion magic is the equivalent of saying a black man only likes Chicken. They've never rolled a Spriggan, because they can't so they aren't aware of how deep the illusion tree can go.

Now I have to explain some DnD...

Lucky for me my DnD character actually happens to be an Illusion mage. What Kirito did was known as a Physical illusion. Spells like this are part of an illusion mages pool of powers. I can smash people with illusionary hands and whatnot.

Honestly if you want to understand the concept just imagine illusion magic as Mind control mixed with the force from Star Wars. It's deceptively powerful, and the players reactions to it are actually the reactions I typically get in DnD when I come out with this shit. xD

It is very common for people to just scoff at an illusion mage, quite simply for the very reason that they've never rolled as one, they aren't commonly played because the name itself makes them sound useless and under powered.

A few weeks back I had a dragonborne player attack me because he wanted a ring I picked up (He was alligned Chaotic evil)After he attacked the illusion of myself that I always project for safety reasons, I set him on fire, knocked him prone, then created the visage of his father from his own memory banks to pin him to the floor while I wailed on him from afar til he called Mercy.

closest things I know of to what you seem to be talking about. an illusonary attack doesn't have actual physical substance. it works because the enemy believes it works. the fact that Kirito actually experiences reality as though he were the monster he appears to be tells me that this is not ilusion magic more than anything else. if it were a figment, we could have the illusion of a monster and if they believe it can attack them then it will, but it can't affect Kirito's reality in any way. if it's a phantasm it might be able to make him perceive reality in a different way and also the enemies that got caught in it but it couldn't affect the pre-existing reality of their magical shields - nor would outside observers (the group watching on the sidelines) be able to perceive it in any way.

the spell quite simply has all the hallmarks of an Alteration/Transmutation spell (something from the polymorph line to be precise.)

We play a mixture of version 3.5 and above, but our recent campaign was in a cave that distorted magic. (Which totally sucked for me) However I managed an awesome roll so DM pulled some attacks from version 1 for her own nostalgic amusement instead of the stuff I was trying to cast. Thus the smashy hand happened. (and yes 3.5 is broken lol )

Again, my point is the only people stating "Spriggans can only use non-combat oriented illusion Magic" are not spriggans and have never been spriggans. The spell exists in the games database, and is usable by Spriggans, thus the only thing you can deduce is that there are some combat oriented spells in the spriggans arsenal meaning the statements are just blind racism and not base don personal knowledge.

but I'd rewatch that scene again if I were you. the statements that were made did not refer to Spriggans and their natural magic affinities or any sort of prejudice along those lines, but rather seemed to reference familiarity with the specific spell in question (in Leafa's case she actually knew the spell by the magic syllable combination) and what it could and could not accomplish. the magic system as we've already discussed in previous pages seems to at least be in theory accessible to all the races. it's only been stated that races have a particular strength they're better at - despite the racism you mention I haven't seen a statement to the effect that 'x race can only do y' except in jest

Personally, I do not think of this game as a proper controlled mmo, but rather as (whatever his name) guys's personal plaything. We have already seen that kirito got half of his properties transferred so this is probably a half-assed buggy SAO mod. It was supposed to be magic-based but typical SAO swords attack weren't even deleted. Also, regarding kirito:
- either this guy intentionally let kirito do as he wish, so kirito would reach the top and get crushed and humiliated by him
- as this guy's plaything, he doesn't even care to balance and moderate the game(though he releases some updates to keep players happy), because soon enough he'll have players on this mindfuck thing he mentioned earlier. so there probably are no gm's you keep mentioning. Also afaik, SAO had everything sorted out by game's AI(rather than human gm), so it could be that kirito doesn't appear to ai as anything wrong, or because ai don't have regulations concerning that save-exploit

She knew it by what it could or could not accomplish for her. But not what it could for him.

On top of this the enemy mage was well aware of what it could do for Kirito, as he tried to spout out a counter strat to it while explaining it to his men.
