You know, I'd be surprised if the story of the new game (elves, fairies, seelie, whatever) matters at all. Consider how little attention Sword Art Online paid to the story of its setting - it's a world called Aincrad, there's floating cities and there's monsters people kill. I'd expect a similar level of engagement with the 'story' in the next arc, unless they're going to give NPCs talking roles. This is still from the perspective of gamers, and MMO gamers at that. The game is an obstacle that Kirito needs to overcome. He'll master the game's mechanics and social interactions, but he probably won't get lost in the subtelties of the quest text.
And re: First impressions. There's a reason a lot of anime put a bigger animation budget on their first episode. THey matter. Studios know they matter. They will do their damnedst to be sure that the first episode of a show gives you a hook that makes you want to keep watching. Some anime can get better - some of my favourites definitely have - but if they bungle their first episode, or if you don't care for it, that's a pretty fair strike against a series. One can use the argument that 'it gets better later', sure, but... later hasn't come yet. Oninosweeney is quite fair in being sceptical of where the arc is heading and not liking this week's episode. |
