In theory One Piece has 10% filler, Naruto has 30%, Bleach had 50%. And I don't even account the dragging out with summaries, flashbacks, and previews. Those can cut down the important duration to half.
Personally I do consider flashbacks to be filler. It's just a matter of how excessive they get. In HxH we get a flashback episode every now and then, I'm fine with that. With Naruto(and One Piece was also heading in this direction) we get flashbacks to events that took place in the previous episode or even just minutes earlier in the current episode you're watching. I can't really blame the people producing the anime for it though, otherwise we'd end up with a situation like the original HxH anime with massive breaks between the series, a cliffhanger for the first OVA, and then finishing the GI arc later on in the 2nd OVA.

I hope this does really well, because I'd love to see some other shounen type shows get re-done now that their mangas have finally ended(or have a decade+ long gap). I haven't seen the first 2 movies yet, but it blew my mind when I read a while back that the 2nd major arc in Berserk was getting adapted into a series of movies. If that's successful maybe we'll get a continuing adaptation of the rest of it as well. There are ways to make shounen animes that don't involve recapping the first episode 20 times, or 15 minute kamehameha power up sequences.

Hello people new here.

Okay i just recently looked at most of the post and oh my the things I've read. This forum is probably one of the most subjugated forums i have seen yet. I have not seen one compliment on how MH was handling the story. I saw more of people comparing this to the Unfaithful 1999 as some sort of source material for the 2011 version. Then older version didn't flesh out anything. All it did was prolong the development of the story. The story flesh's out itself. I know more people that dropped the 1999 series just because they didn't like the first 12 episodes. I've rarely ever seen that with the 2011 anime.

Also it seems like everyone here takes the story way to literally when your suppose connect it from episode 1 to episode 43. If you guys re watch the the anime you'll definitely see everything flows better and come off as more natural. There isn't any missing development. I could easily explain any question you guys throw at me with quite good reasoning.

Also if i want to get to the nitty and gritty, the 1999 didn't really know how to portray the story. All it did was indirectly make Kurapika look like a girl, Totally made Gon look more generous and less mischievous than he actually is. If you guys hadn't noticed Gon cheats. He even stole ponzu tag to give to leorio. Also people dying left and right is suppose to come off as normal in this anime, and thats what it's doing. Overall the direction and execution of the 2011 anime is definitely bringing in more fans. No doubt in my mind that this anime will surpass the 1999.

I just recommend watching the series as strictly it's own anime and not the 1999 anime. It gave enough plot holes already.

I haven't seen the first series and I've only read a bit of the manga so I don't have much to compare the current series to. That being said I find it to be very, very shounen. It follows all the tropes and idiocracies of the genres making a lot of it really cliche. The standard character types are all there and Gon is pretty much a less cool version of Luffy. All that being said I find the show to be rather charming. It's easy to watch and never crosses into the annoying territory.

Although the characters basically follow the patterns of their archetype, they do tend to have just enough personality to raise them above being cardboard cutouts. In particular I am enjoying watch Killua. An innocent looking boy that is actually a savage killer. He struggles to balance his emotions and desire to have friends with brutal nature. I really want to like Hisoka as well but at this point he's just too much of a caricature for me to really get into his character. I usually really like that twisted sadistic type of character but Hisoka is just too overblown. Gon as the lead is adequate. He's missing the charisma of a great shounen lead like Luffy. However he gets the job done and isn't annoying so it could be worse. The rest of the cast is serviceable without being really special. Each character serves their role without getting in the way of progress.

The majority of the plot up to this point has just been meeting the characters and passing the Hunter Exam. It's very simple of executed in a very straightforward manner and done well for what it is. The biggest pit fall of these long running series is the pacing. Plot lines and battles get stretched out for far too long and the viewers patience tends to wear thin. I know there are real world reasons can be blamed for some of these pacing issues but it is still an annoying problem but so far Hunter has managed to keep a steady pace of progress with nothing really getting unnecessarily prolonged. Although the battles of the last phase of the exam left me feeling a little underwhelmed. I think more time could have been spent there even with
Still I've been pretty impressed with the smooth progression of the story thus far.

When I first started I wasn't too fond of the character design or the animation quality but over time I've gotten used to it. The character designs are varied and there is no problem with characters suffering from same face syndrome. While I'm still no overly fond of the designs, I do like the look of Hisoka. His design is completely different from everyone else almost to the point where he looks like he belongs in a different show which suits his character perfectly. The background art is decent without being particularly detailed but again it manages to get the job done. The show has taken place in a lot of different locations so with the quick pacing the backgrounds never get too repetitive or boring. The animation itself tends to vary between the episodes with some looking better than others. Generally the show is using it's budget well with episodes containing more action tending to have the better looking animation.

I'm really not fond of this OST at all. The background music has gotten very stale and repetitive after 25 episodes. The individual themes are mediocre and there need to be more of them as I'm already tired of hearing the same ones repeated over and over again. However, the voice acting is excellent. All the characters voices are fitting and the voice actors really put some life into these lines. The writing is very simple but the voice actors are able to make up for that a little by putting plenty of emotion into all the right places.

Overall I don't think this is anything special but it is a well shounen anime that manages to have it's own aura and charm. If someone isn't a fan of shounen anime then this show won't be the one to change their mind but if someone is willing to ignore all the cliches and just go with the flow then they will have an enjoyable experience without being blown away by it.
Completely and utterly disagree with you 100%
Gon isn't your typical protaginist at all
-He sees people die in front of him left and right and does nothing about it.
-He doesn't care if he dies as long as he gets what he wants.
-He loves the thrill of being in a life death situation. It's emphasized greatly.
-The thought actually came across his mind. Choosing whether to let his friends die or to complete his objective. What protagonist thinks like that?
-Killua himself says that Gon is self-absorbed sometimes.
-He's simple minded but cunning. Naive as well as stupid in some instances... and there is not one episode that contradicts his character.

This is just bits and pieces really, In the manga he does shit that no one protagnist i have ever seen do. It's up to you to find out.

Also it's true that Togashi uses elements of a typical shounen but he does it in a way where the story becomes less and less predictable because of them.Examples....

From the end of the Hunter exam to the end of Heavens arena.
-Gon losses the fight with Hanzo and had no power up... but wins because of his self absorbed personality.
-Gon cries for being helpless and weak for not being able to fend off Hisoka
-Even though Killua's brother said that he would kill Gon, Killua still did absolutely nothing about it.No friendship speech. He decided to give in to what his brother said than to rather help out his best friend.
-Gon and his closest friends such as Kurpika and Leorio went to go save killua. Even though Kurpika and Leorio never had deep connections with Killua. This is easily explained throughout the whole hunter exam on why those 2 would go such lengths for Gon
-Killua comes bak with gon than the group seperates.
-Gon and Killua come off as badass kids in the first floors, but soon later realize they still got a lot to learn.
-They beat 3 handicapped nen users that strictly built their nen specifically for heavens arena(This is necessary or else it would seem like Gon and Killua are topnotch nen users which in actuallity they're still noobs.)
-Hisoka fucks around with Kastro the Whole fight, which made him and his mystic 100x better
-Gon and Killua beat the three dudes.
-Gon vs Hisoka....Gon still loses but still leaves happy because he finally returned the favor to Hisoka... Arc ends....
Throughout all this Gon hasn't won a battle that meant something to his character. He hasn't yet fought "the Bosses of all bosses and actually beat em with his own fist" Usually the first arc of most shounens start with a villain and eventually gets beat by the main protagonist at the end of the arc.
This series is already in its 4th arc and not once has Gon beat a "main villain" character. So i don't see much similarities to other shounen really...

How more anticlimactic can this series get. i don't even want to touch if Hisoka should even be in the story or not because obviously you haven't read all the material..

Anyways I have already showed my friends the 2011 anime as their first anime. They haven't dropped it since....So yeah I pretty much disagree with everything you say.

Also this Series started a whole year before Naruto, so the material it's showing is all original.

So, I hear the show has had less censorship as of late. Any truth to that? And to what extent?

I'm now watching this 2011 remake (on episode 8 now) and really, there's some things I'd love to see uncensored/without toning down the dark ambiance, in all its Madhouse-2012-animated glory. They've probably got to that by now:

Yes they took out the censorship to the point they don't hide anything. The worst case of censorship is the one considering someone's heart... The battle you describe in the spoile is done great.

Definitely less censorship. The show took a bit of a dark turn with the auction and has been mostly centered on Kurapika and the mafia. Still one of my favorite shows by far.

Oh, great Link, I'm seeing it too, waiting for the next episode.

The censorship, well, how to say... There is censorship, a bit annoying in some times (the people that Hisoka kills, the "heart" of Johness by Killua, many characters with their heads in their bodies (xD)), but in the York Shin arc the censorship has decreased a lot, although people doesn't loose their eyes of a punch (the manga is VERY disgusting, I'm surprised that it's published in Jump xD) but now... it's fine, although it can be better. I'd say it is to the same level that the censorship of Nippon but in different aspects.

This anime is loyal to the manga (except the scene of Kaito/Kite, WTF...?!) and the animation and rhythm is amazing, so I'm pleased with it. The music is strange but later you'll get used and it will appear other good themes, with their dark ambientation.

And the 2nd ending is love <)

Oh, and about this episode (48):
