I had one of these on a forum for my Darkthrone (online text based war game) clan. It was at the top of the forums and only held about ten lines worth of communication. I know there are IRCs, but a global chat on the forum itself would be more easily accessible and allow for the community to grow closer. I blame Durarara! for reminding me of the global chat btw

(Note; I suspect what you are referring to is a shout box?)
Well, there might be some degree of advantage over IRC, I'm just not sure if its worth it. Imho, The IRC seems to fill the "Casual Chat" niche fine. However, I would think that perhaps a "IRC" next to "Forum" up in the navigation bar might be a good idea. The main issue with IRC is accessibility, but in the end the IRC is already quite established. To form a competing chat might be a tad counter-productive. Aye, that be a better idea. A nice easy link to the AP IRC would be cool :) And yeah, a shoutbox was exactly what I was trying to recall
it would definitely be counter productive I reckon if the IRC is that established. I just want to be able to easily chat it up with other fellow APers about... well whatever really Not to mention not everyone is tech savvy, so the simpler the better :)

There's a link to the IRC chan at the bottom of every page, it's called (amazingly enough) IRC Channel. :p
Just look in the links at the bottom of the page, in the middle column titlted "elsewhere" & you'll see it. For those who don't have or don't want to install an IRC client, there are some webclients available. See my last post in this thread: New official IRC channel: #anime-planet.com ^_^ for two options (mibbit & rizon's own client). As far as a shoutbox goes, many sites who have shoutboxes also have IRC chans, the 2 forms of chat tend to attract different users & different usages. The shoutbox is much quicker & simpler to use, and as such tends to get used more by more people. Shoutbox also has the arguable advantage that posts linger even after you leave, allowing you to easily find out what (if any) convo you might have missed. On the other hand, shoutboxes tend to be very limited, sorta like comparing a twitter account to an actual website. They're good for firing off quick convos while you're on the site & don't want to fire up a seperate program, but they're not really good for longer or more in-depth convos. In the end, shoutboxes tend to be almost a hybrid between a forum & an IRC chan, and can often be used side by side with an IRC chan. The only way to know for sure if it'll work with any given group is to try it. There are a number of free hosted shoutboxes out there if sothis wants to try it without installing anything (they work simply via an iframe tag on the page).

I caught on to about half of that and I feel like Yui, but I'm not completely Neanderthalic so I can still confidently say, "That sounds like a good idea."
