I think it's within my power to make a page that would compare two users' anime lists and show the ones that are common to both lists. Then you could see if one user dropped it or if they finished it, what they rated it, etc. This isn't exactly (Edit: or at all :D) what you were asking for, but it might be a start. I'll talk to sothis...

I had a similar idea, but just to compare one persons list at a time - like if you want to compare your list to a friends, it shows you what anime you have in common...

This idea has a lot of potential. But where I see it could really shine is to have a search feature for similar users. The way it would work is, by comparing anime lists and anime ratings, the formula would generate some sort of "similarity" rating between you (the user making the search) and all other users. Then, you could try to find, say, all users with a similarity rating of 80% or above.
Hopefully, there would be a convenient way to add all these results to your favourites list, and then you could scan the profiles of these new users manually for new recommendations, reviews and anime. |

This is exactly what Last.fm does with music and connecting users with similar music tastes together. I searched the forums for this post because it was something that I would love to see implemented into anime-planet.
I understand that you think it would detract from users submitting recommendations and discovering new anime that way, but in my experience with the similarly functioning last.fm that has both functions linking similar music as well as similar users together, the feature would add in incredible depth to the community and would make it incredibly easy to meet, and connect with users with similar taste which encourages users to be more involved in the community as a whole. Please give this feature some more consideration, and check out last.fm if you're in more need of convincing. |
