And thus it still isn't the most loved since you have loud haters based on exactly what you said. And there's just as many haters, if not more. Eva is a controversial show (and I'll even grant thought-provoking even though I felt it tried way way too hard to appear intelligent without being so) for sure, but not most loved of the 1990s.

Sailor Moon, Hello Kitty, Macross 7/Plus, all the Gundams in that time, Summer's Beginning, Captain Tylor, CCS, and many more were a lot more popular in the '90s. Eva is just the one everyone in the west knew of at the time (given it didn't occur to a lot of people Sailor Moon was an anime for some reason).

How ironic ... I think haters played a major role for the success of Eva and I think that without them Eva wouldn't have gained so much attention.

Purikyua's really popular. Just cuz it didn't make it to the west (but made it to Canada, if that tells you anything . . . ;p) doesn't mean it ain't popular. How many of the shows have you like have been allowed to last so many seasons? ;p

They both made it to Italy (don't know if can be considered west ;P). Here they are popular like Naruto, but to be honest I don't see many MMPPP or Pretty Cure haters.
