Rurouni Kenshin OVA's (anime was so meh, but the OVA's where so beautiful and bloody)
Full Metal Panic (No lolis and I dislike mecha.)
Code Geass (ditto)
Martian Successor Nadesco
Clannad After Story so far (was bitter bout KyoAni not doing Little Busters and I don't really like Nagisa at all, but Mei-chan =

)

This was quite a hard one for me, as most shows I watch that I expect to be mediocre are mediocre, but I inflict them upon myself anyway. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. A few that did exceed expectations of mediocrity, or near-mediocrity, are:

Lucky Star
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Samurai Champloo
Fruits Basket
BECK

Baccano!

Gintama
Nodame Cantabile

all of those i didnt expect much hearing about them, but mainly started due to someone recommending it, with exception of nodame, i was a bit eh by all those first episodes (though halfway through dtb 1st episode i started to get into it)... and then i was just blown away by how much i ended up liking those series (well gintama is still airing so i guess i cant really comment on gintama in the past tense)

and just cause im watching it atm, Crest of the Stars, i didnt expect to be enjoying it as much as i am... its really quite surprising how enjoyable it is when there's not a massive amount going for it

ARIA The Animation - Tbh I thought it was a mediocre romance series.
Sexy Commando - I was looking for an ecchi series when I found this pearl :)
Ouran High School Host Club - I thought it was an ordinary, generic shoujo series.
xxxHOLiC - It looked like crap when I saw the character designs.
Tokyo Godfathers - I thought it would be a boring drama.

1. Welcome to the NHK - didn't really know what this was about before I watched it just heard it was good and was really surprised about it.
2.The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. - hate high school anime but this surprised me dam hilarious

I know that we are limited to 5 but after watching the final episode of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, I have to admit that I was greatly surprised that I enjoyed it so much. I know it's heresy but I even liked the dub and plan to watch it in sub form soon.
