10/26/08 - Top 5 anime with under 1000 views

This might be kinda arbitrary, but should be interesting nonetheless. For this week's vote we'll pick our top 5 anime with less than 1000 views in the anirec.

For our purposes we'll consider only the watched count as a rule of thumb, but if a series has more watching than watched (as will be the case with a lot of recently finished series and any given current long-running series) then that should be added on as well. That's the only requirement - anything under 1000 by that count is free game. For any obscurists wondering why the ceiling isn't even lower, it's because I figured that would probably exclude a lot of people.

I pretty much checked my top five to see if there were any titles under 1000(there were two), and then browsed other titles I'd highly rated and then selected the cream of the corp.


1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes , 162 views. Let's see how many polls I can gratutituously throw this in, eh? But seriously, an inevitable choice for me. A brilliant, engrossing and surprisingly literate space opera. With lots and lots of classical music, a huge cast, spot-on politicking and more fleet battles than I could stick in a sandwich.
2. Angel's Egg, 555 views. Another one of my all-time favourite animes. A beautiful, haunting, elegant, symbolic film. I'm surprised this one is so low, actually, I thought it was very well known.
3. Ocean Waves, 349 views. One of my favourite Ghibli films. A superb romantic slice-of-life with a smart script and Ghibli's usual wonderful watercolour work.
4. 1001 Nights, 145 views. My favourite animated short. Dream-like Arabian imagery from the mind of Yoshitaka Amano, who also worked on my number two pick. Did you know he's working on an anime adaption of the Magic Flute now? I can't wait!
5. Koi Kaze, 914 views. Because I can arbitrarily jump ship when I feel like it. This used to be Robot Carnival, which is good too.

I liked Tekkon Kinkreet too. It's a fun movie. Sure, it's main pull is the visuals, but I thought the plot and characters were decent. Quite a bit of the criticism I've read is directed at director Michael Arias (much like Yoshiharu Ashino gets for Tweeny Witches), but, while he's no, say, Masaaki Yuasa, he did a good job.

Now Vexille, there's a movie that's all flashy gimmick and nothing else.

I agree for both, maybe the main thing about Tekkon Kinkreet is that it could have been better? People seem to be harsher about things they had high expectations for.

Vexille... I've seen it and can't remember well even though it wasn't long ago which says a lot. I'm not that fond of cgi films on the whole there is something about the ascetic that bothers me. There is also a tendancy to include human detail (texture to the skin, blemishes etc...) on the men and not the women which I find irritating. Maybe it is the fact that they are so realistic yet they don’t have the focus a camera provides and the is too much unnecessary movement. I find the eye movement disconcerting. Peoples eyes move a lot but you don’t notice it most of the time while in cgi films they do so far mostly in my experience… I’m waffling now.

Quite true. I went in after reading the reviews and I had fairly low expectations. So it's fair to say the film exceeded them. Interestingly, the film was recieved more warmly by mainstream critics, it sits at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, IIRC.

The only CGI anime I liked from an aesthetic standpoint was Malice@Doll, which makes a virtue out of its low-budget CGI to go for a kind of creepily effective stop-motion feel. Can't really recommend it, though (it's basically Serial Experiments Lain with hentai).
