Death Note (an intense strategic rivalry between two geniuses)
KGNE (an emotional rivalry brought about more by the tragic circumstances than the will of the characters) Monster (an exquisite symbolic rivalry between one man who upholds life at all costs and a man who seeks only the destruction of himself and the world alongside him – the effect is ridiculously engaging) Vampire Knight (a romantic rivalry of two dashing archetypes – one a vampire, the other a vampire hunter – for the love of one girl but with a couple of great twists to the triangle setup) Major all seasons (a professional rivalry between Toshiya and Goro – one plays with his head, the other with his heart, but when in opposition on the pitch they are equally thrilling to watch)

Samurai Champloo ( obligatory obvious pick )
Tsukihime ( Arcueid vs Ciel, okay there wasn't much of it in the anime version, but in the visual novel it was pretty intense :P ) School Days ( Kotonoha vs Sekai ) Nodame Cantabile ( Nodame vs Masumi, one of the most hilarious rivalry you'll ever see )

X Jubei Chan: Revenge of the Siberia Yagyu Furuba Tsukihime (even if it never happened in the anime . . . well, there were minor hints . . .) Most of these aren't "flashy" rivalries but they do advance characters quite a bit. |
