This one wasn't quite as heavily suggested, but it seemed rather interesting... So, this week we'll vote for 5 anime with the best settings!
In case anyone's unclear, the 'setting' is basically the world/environment in which the story takes place. This includes things like culture, history/lore, clothing style, etc. And remember, when voting please just list the titles at the top of your post, and put any comments down afterwards. Put "no vote" at the top if you just want to discuss something. Happy Voting ^_^ ***Voting Closed*** The top 5: Fullmetal Alchemist Last Exile Haibane Renmei Seirei no Moribito Planetes Thanks for voting! Last edited by Cetonis; 01-28-2008 at 06:24 AM. |

- RahXephon
- The Place Promised in Our Early Days - SaiKano - Ergo Proxy - Chrno Crusade I just LOVE post-war settings, don't ask me why, but that explains my first 4 picks. I hesitated a lot on my 5th pick, but I think Chrno Crusade is a pretty good choice. That's a pretty good idea for a top 5 btw, good work =) Last edited by Fireaxe; 01-21-2008 at 12:27 PM. |

Fullmetal Alchemist
Twelve Kingdoms .Hack//Sign Haibane Renmei Escaflowne Hard to choose. I'll have to think more about it for the other 3. I agree this is a great idea for top 5. edit: Here's the last 3 Escaflowne - I'm re watching it now with a friend. I had forgotten how many anime elements were in it! :P

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann - love the quirky animal designs and the history of why the people live in caves / fight the Ganmen
Jyu Oh Sei - great plant-human interaction, and the primitive way of life was interesting Seirei no Moribito - at times it was like watching a documentary, that's how detailed the cultural/religious concepts were Escaflowne - highly comprehensive details to the world, from clothes to the mecha, to the different species of humanoids Denno Coil - never completed it (no time, really), but what entertained me the most about it was its world concept. Really brilliant and quirky actually.

Jyu Oh Sei Juuni Kokki Princess Mononoke Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto This has got to be the easiest list ever for me :p The setting made the 5 anime listed above (though Bakumatsu wasn't my kind of thing) |

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Castle in the Sky Ghost in the Shell Gundam 0080 Good Witch of the West ~Astraea Testament~ Utena: For the first season or so all you can really do is get accustomed to the setting, and then things start getting tweaked this way and that. Castle in the Sky: Miyazaki really went on a limb for this one. The opening sequence and so many other things about it point to there being a lot more in that world that we just don't get to see. Nausicaa's setting might better, but I haven't seen it. Ghost in the Shell: Probably the most realistic futuristic anime. It's totally where the human race could be in a hundred years or so. Gundam 0080: Other Gundams only bother really telling the pilots' stories or those consistently directly affected by war. This show takes the setting colony/civilian side, which is why the setting became so great. It took something that Gundam fans knew and looked at the One Year War from a different perspective. Good Witch of the West ~Astraea Testament~ : Like the Seikai Trilogy was a character driven show set in an imaginative and expansive sci-fi world, the same is true for Good Witch and fantasy. Politics, high society, religion, and history are all in the backdrop of this show, and the characters are rich, too. Most interesting fact about this setting to me: Only the highest classes in society are allowed to speak about or reference fairy tales. I'd imagine that really keeps the lower classes from believing in dreams or anything like that and keep them down. |

1. one piece - a world of pirates, unlimited possibilities with so many islands and countries, literally its unique style of different species, theres merman, angels, giants, giant sea monsters, islands that are living sea creatures, and everyone has unique clothing and little nuances among them, too much to describe them all
2. Berserk - well technically in the anime, the berserk world wasnt completely explored, but i really love anything medieval, castle sieges, mass soldiers, medieval armour. for berserk theres also that unknown very dark side to it, and if u read the manga berserk's dark side is pretty crazy to say the least 3. Naruto - well bleh wat can u say, a ninja world would be pretty awesome, as long as u take out all emo-ness and mass flashbacks.... and naruto definitely uses its ninja world to its advantage with different countries with their own styles and monsters/enemies 4. Gundam - hmm well pretty much all gundam... cause damn a universe with giant robots = awesome 5. Pokemon - no dunt throw stones at me :/ im not sure if there was an anime like pet/companion type before pokemon, so yea that world is pretty interesting i would maybe tie evangelion with #5, not cause of the mecha but the setting of a world about to be destroyed and i cant think of an anime that focused on a world on the brink of destruction before evangelion |
