This is definitely the longest list of options suggested for any AniRec of the Week. I have tallied the list very carefully, but feel free to let me know if my counts are off because we have a lot of close contenders.

umm... i would say love hina but its not a great love story in my opinion. I would say Cowboy bebop though between spike and Julia.

Not pure romances maybe, but they all have romance as an important factor.

A. Whisper from the Heart: just a beautiful piece of work, its a rather simple story but I found it very touching.
B. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: I like tragic love stories, and this one is certainly that.
C. Lunar Legend Tsukihime: Not a love story in its entirety, but it does contain a very sad story of doomed love.
D. Samurai X: Betrayal: Wonderful imagery and tragic tale of love lost.
E. five centimeters per second: I enjoyed the dialogue and the imagery, and despite the fact that it was short and not perfect, it left an impression on me.

These are some of my favorite love stories in anime. There are some others that are very good but they're in anime that aren't realy love stories, but just happen to have romance elements in them. For that reason, I didn't bother listing them.

I would really, REALLY like to add Lovely Complex, but I have watched like a fifth of the series, and so I can't claim to understand it wholly. But seriously, it was so good, the series could not in any way have gone wrong. Nodame Cantabile is in there because it's vehicle for the 'romance' (if you want to call Chiaki's physical abuse that, lol) is quite unconventional. And kudos to CCS for making the yaoi part of the romance one of the most touching stories ever. Long live Yue!

These are the best romances (and not situational attachments) that I can come up with right now half asleep.
