Lol, sorry, its true Sothis mentioned BeBop. When i see ------ line that looks like this i assume that signature follows and skip rest of post :-) thats how i delimit sigs in my mail hehehe, sorry. Ghost in the shell overrated? I never seen anyone hyping over GITS. Its fact that many pepole who dont watch anime seen GITS, so they go "GITS is great, huge thing man!". But then again they compare it to western movies.

Well, and how could a show be overrated without being lauded? Of course, all the most overrated shows are among the most lauded, almost by definition. That's the whole point - to find which are praised more than they actually should be. For GITS, it's IMHO only slightly overestimated, and most people just recommend it as something to start watching anime with. Simply something similar to Western movies and well done. I personally rather recommend art things like Pale Cocoon first, to break the idea that all anime is silly pop stuff. But GITS is really among well westernized movies, easy to watch and not pushing in with anime specific stuff, so if one asks "I want to see some anime too, what to start with?", that's among the best choices for generic audience. |

Just for the record - I definitelly don't think that NGE is overrated. It isn't. And I certainly don't like its middle (sadly biggest) comedy part, but still I kinda feel I like it (when looking backwards in time). Of course, my feelings towards NGE have (I hope) no influence on the fact I think it's not overrated. EDIT: Oh, and regarding Ghost in the Shell (movie) mentioned by sothis - why do you think it is overrated? In this case (for nowadays viewers) I think the disappointment stems partly from the fact it is SO old - and, admittedly not so good (heh) - but mainly from the fact everybody knows the results of GitS and its impact on culture (Matrix, etc). So I think this "overrating" (as in 'it isn't as great as I thought it to be') of GitS is caused (maybe subconsciously) by the fact that people watching it nowadays has unreasonably overrated (heh) expectations towards that quoted movie ^_^ Hmm, maybe there should be some definition of "overrated"... I guess in this thread we are using "overrated" as in "it has pretty high average rating, but it isn't so entertaining/interesting/etc." - we are disregarding the impact that actual anime had on history, culture, future of animation etc. Last edited by sevencreature; 06-10-2007 at 08:39 AM. |

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Naruto 3. Neon Genesis Evangelion 4. Dragon Ball Z 5. Bleach They are not only in any specific order and only numbered them due to my compulsiveness. And these desicions are not based on what the anime world thinks, but what I think and read here or heard other people say... Cowboy Bebop: Watched only a few episodes thought it was extremely poor and boring, not worth the praise I heard it get. Naruto Another show which I thought was poorly done I heard it get lots of praise... Neon Genesis Evangelion Same reason as everybody else... Dragon Ball Z Should be obvious... Bleach Despite I liked the first four episodes and plan to follow it a bit more it was not nearly as good as I heard it was... I wish I had more votes to add Paranoia Agent (First 3 episodes or so where great, but then it became crap in the middle and then ok at the end) and Berserk (Fucking excellent, but still gets too much praise specially since it has those fucking annoying endless stills...) |

Naruto, Hellsing.
Everything else that receives lots of hype and attention has at least some merit, and whether or not the hype is undeserved is usually legitimately debatable. I don't think this is the case with Naruto. A friend of mine put it in far better words than I ever could: Quote:
