That's not what I've experienced. I know a group of people that totally overrated Ouran...and I was one of the *very* few people in the group that didn't like Ouran. Well to add to this, there was a bunch of girls there at the announcement of the cast from what I read on animeondvd's forum. When Vic was announced for his part all the girls yelled so loud that it was deafening to the ears. Thats what one con goers said in his post about it. So you are right about that, the fangirls will go nuts just because one of there cute favs is in it. And they will worship it like crazy as you said.

akira is good, its given alot of attention and a lot of significance, but i dont think its made overrated, or people rate akira as such a brilliant anime. Most stuff said about it is pretty much true, and whilst i think it has been given way too much significance in the west as being the epitome of anime, however in the anime community i dont think its as overrated as being better that what it really is.

I'm definitely going to say Code Geass, and mostly for the second season. It just started getting ridiculous.

uhm, but I definitely ditto Neon Genesis Evangelion as well as Elfen Lied. I love horror/gore/dark anime, but I just couldn't sit through Elfen lied, it was so trite it hurt.

errrrrm I won't say most shonen because they don't try to be some deep/high-falutin' anime most of the time. Like Bleach is completely ridiculous, drawn out, etc, but it never tries to be anything other than that. =)
