I'd say go for poster sites and try your luck or go to ebay (there's actually some really good Japanese ones there) as I don't recall running into posters often at my usual vendors. That or a physical store. You could always (especially if you're looking for posters and not scrolls) go to a printshop with a very good jpeg/png and print a large poster yourself. It's been a while since I've had to print something the size of a poster but the price to do so actually was quite good considering buying most posters online and paying shipping. I don't think prices would've gone up that much.
Plus that way you can get the image you want.

you can always buy an issue of Megami magazine for 20 dollars and it includes 7 mini double sided posters(17 X 11 1/2) and a double sided mega poster (20 X 29)

Or you can be a nut job and make your own.
That's the AX (Anime Expo) '96 poster. Since it's very rare and thus very difficult to get a hold of, I just found the best image of it I could online and printed it out on several sheets, cut them down, lined them up and taped them together. I think it came out pretty nicely.

Im going to make my own with my chibis. Then buy a nice screen to display the image. Hmm lets see i have about 100 so that fills about 1 line.
 Guess I'll give you guys a holler in about 7 years.
