So far, overall, I've been pleased with Deep Discount DVD. They ship fairly fast, and are one of the least expensive Region 1 source I've found that are absolutely not bootleggers (they have 0 tolerance for bootlegs.)
Only down side is, if you take advantage of the free shipping, if the package disappears, you're out of luck. I have had ONE package - they have the paperwork where they shipped it, but since I didn't pay for a premium shipment, they shipped US Postal Service, and there was no tracking nor insurance on it. Sigh. So I got to buy two copies of ROD/OVA instead of one. |

I cant say I've had that experience with DDD at all. I've bought nearly 95% of my entire anime collection from them, and have only been disappointed a couple times, once when they ran out of Last Exile Vol.1 LE (I preordered the day it was put on their site), and once when my package got 'lost' in the mail (which i got a replacement for).
Otherwise, DDD is my #1 choice for R1 DVDs, I always use the free shipping, mainly because I'm not interested in when my package gets here (most of the times, I've already seen the show, or I already have quite a bit of backlog, fansubs included). With most ADV titles, my shipping gets out a week early, so I get the dvd well before the release date. That and they definitely do have the cheapest prices online, guaranteed (excluding any specials like Rightstuf has). Come across a coupon code for 20%, which is an absolute rarity, and your anime purchase just got made. They have a great selection of anime, I only wish they'd revamp the site a bit, to make it easier to search for low-bandwith people. They are often a few weeks behind on listing upcoming releases though, but they're working on it. Thats all the good points I can think of, I've never really had a problem with them. Customer Service via phone is great, nearly no wait times, email is a toughie though, sometimes a couple days late. |

DDD is great for sales, and for the prices. I will say that the shipping time is usually pretty slow, and they don't tell you right away if something isn't in stock. You have to be careful that you check your order AFTER you make it. For example, I wanted to buy my dad the star trek tv series box set 1 for xmas. He loves one of the episodes on the first set, but it was out of stock. I was buying dvds with a sale that had to have the dvds in stock to count. Anyways, because it wasn't in stock, I went for the 2nd season instead, which was listed as in stock on the site. A week later I checked the site to see my order status and noticed that lo and behold, set 2 was also out of stock! They never informed me, and by the time I called, they claimed my order had been packed and they couldn't change it (even though it took another 3 days for them to ship it... yeah right).
Whatever the case, I usually am fairly pleased with the service. Granted, the shipping sucks and there are sometimes problems, but you can't beat the price. If you'd prefer something a bit more reliable (probably) and faster, go for someone else if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks. |

Originally I made many of my purchases at DVDP (DVD pacific) but my main problem with them is with there shipping. Instead of by buying more which should drive the shipping price down, (to encourage consumers to buy more) they raise the price. Ever since I have known about DDD ("DeepDiscountDVD" will be refering it to as this for the rest of the post) I have had no discs that were rattleing inside the case (previous had several with DVDP) and they offer free shipping and if you want it fast you can simply add 5.98 for 2-5 day shipping regardless how many items you add to your shopping cart! (I hate to make this a post comparing but bear with me...) Another reason I perfer DDD is because they also have sell other things that are indirectly related to anime (like DVD racks) hell I got mine there and it has been working great! Another plus is there yearly 20% off ANYTHING in there store for a week or so (last one was in June) which is a very nice saving on boxsets which they already sale very low. Compared to DVDP which sale was a petty 5% which they titled it there "summer saving" early June. The only thing about DVDP that is semi better then DDD is there inventory of anime, there are some (not many) that DVDP has that DDD doesn't. As for cheaper generally DDD is cheaper when you add in the shipping fees you would have to pay over at DVDP (except in some minor cases).

This place has some of the best prices for out there. And now they DVDs, CDs, books, games, and much more. Their manga/DVD prices are almost always comparable to TRSI's cheap prices (the 25-30% off items), if not cheaper. And it's ALWAYS free shipping. No matter how little you spend. The downside is that they do not give a tracking ID for packages shipped via free shipping and it can take a bit (it takes usually 5-7 business, or 7-9 days) for stuff to reach either West or East coast even though they are located in Illinois. However, that is of minor consequence to me since I can order however much or little I want and still get free shipping. Their selection is quite big too. I've found new copies of games that Amazon doesn't carry. And what makes them better than TRSI is that it's not anime/manga only. DD, TRSI, and Amazon probably total 95% of my purchases that are not clothing, furniture, or grocery store purchases. And DD is progressively taking a bigger and bigger chunk out of my TRSI purchases (since I get gift certificates from my credit card for Amazon that doesn't change much).

My own experience with DeepDiscount is somewhat mixed. The prices for the items I wanted were indeed better than most, if not all places I looked. Oddly though, my purchases got broken up into multiple deliveries. On the bright side, DeepDiscount only charged for shipping once, which was the original shipping quote. Other oddness ensued when I received the items in (kinda) reverse order of which they had shipped. Despite the first item being shipped a week before the second and third, I received the third first, the second a day later, and the third a day later after that, so the fact that shipments were broken up was somewhat silly. The final package was technically over their 10-20 day shipping estimate, which means the package was fairly slow in comparison to my transactions with other companies. This may have had to do with the fact that customs held the items briefly, but I had to pay customs charges on all the packages so.....
For at least Canada, if you are calculating prices, factor in how much tax WOULD be if you were purchasing at these prices locally. Unlike shipments from places like Amazon.com, DeepDiscount seems to have taxes tacked onto it at the border with frequent regularity. Beyond that, my experience was mostly pleasant, and I would probably do business again with them during their next big anime sale. |
