Animation:
Very nice, but nothing special. Almost every adult looks a bit creepy.

Sound:
Techno music, most of it. Almost only background music. The music fits very nicely, tho again - nothing special.

Story:
Lain, a girl being not really into computers, gets interested in them, after getting an email from her dead friend Chisa. Nothing special actually, but she got it after Chisa died. Slowly getting caught by the WIRED, Lain gets questioned her own being, because - there another one of herself in the WIRED.

Characters:
Many characters, most of them random ones. But the main ones you get quickly attached to.

Value:
Very confusing, but nonetheless extremly interesting. If you're interested in low comedies or mecha series, this is not the series you are looking for. You liked Evangelion? Then get this series.

Overall:

What is Reality? What is the internet? Is there a connection between the two? How do the human beings fit? - This series gives you interesting answers, tho they are questionable.

I only abandoned my flesh. I can tell that I'm still alive.
Can you understand me?
No need to understand now. Soon you will understand it. Others will do.

There is God here...

God...

037 no Baka

The story is, what makes this series very enjoyable and watchable, not the design and nor the music.

I loved watching Lain. I didn't know, what the series is about, when I started watching, so I did not understand the first eps, but after a while it got all cleared up. And sure: The ending was open-ended, but oh well, actually the open questions were the ones, I did not want to be answered.

until i read the reply from "the dreamer" that said "Appreciate her for the questions, not for reponses ", i didn't realize that that's what i like most about Lain - it really is a show that sets up a lot of interesting mysteries, but doens't do a very good job of clearing them up - but maybe that's why i'm still so interested in Lain.

it's an anime that will almost certainly have you at times, if not, u haven't been paying enough attention.

which reminds me, it's very easy to zone off and find yourself not paying attention to what going on, because there are many many many scenes that have no dialogue and no music - so you need to keep a firm grasp on either your mind or your rewind button - i watched it on tape, so rewinding easy.

btw, the pioneer dubs of it aren't that bad. some of the characters have weak voice acting, but all in all it probably made it easier to follow than the dub.

if you like it, checkout the artbook, it has great pix, and there's a version on APN that has massive resolution
