I believe it was one of the first exploration/colonization ships sent out from earth which got lost in space. The people in the spheres were people in cryo or stasis but were never able to be revived because the ship's crew died.
As a bit more detailed explanation: The Abh were originally sent from earth without faster than light travel, in this case plane space travel in search of new planets to colonize. This was the original reason why earth created Abhs because they needed people with extremely long life spans and be acclimated to living in space in order to make the long journey between stars using conventional propulsion. These colonization ships initially sent out spent so long in space they were able to develop plane space technology on their own (unknown to them, Earth independently developed plane space tech at the same time). At some point, the original travelers became merchants where space was their market and technology and information were their goods. Soon they unified together to form the Abh nation which grew to what you know today. Very little, actually almost none of it is explained in the anime, however the original light novels of Banner of the Stars explains the Abh origin in great detail. In all honesty it is a very interesting read and a very "practical" way for the Abh to have come about. Understanding what is considered the Great Sin of the Abh I'll leave up to you. If you're a fan at all of the Banner of the Stars/Crest of the Stars series, I really suggest picking up the three novels from Tokyo Pop. The story is much more flushed out than the anime and the United Mankind force is given a more detailed persona really giving you a better sense of the entire war situation. Though one part I liked more in the anime was Last edited by Lenaxia; 08-05-2009 at 11:40 PM. |
