Blue Gender
Synopsis, screenshots, recommendations ~ Add Recommendations Discuss the completed anime or post full reviews here. Post format and full rules can be found here. __________________________________________ Story/Summary: In the early 21st century, select members of society are exhibiting signs of B-cell growth, a condition that is dangerous, and incurable. Yuji is one of these individuals, who chooses to become a "Sleeper" -- a person who is put into stasis until such time that a cure has been discovered. The peace and tranquillity of Yuji's sleep is interrupted 15 years in the future, in a world much different from the past. In the present, giant bugs known as Blue have invaded the Earth, eating its resources, and... human beings. Now, all Yuji can do is escape through the city with the ones who saved him from his inevitable death, towards Second Earth... mankind's new home in space. Blue Gender (to me) is like a cross between Starship Troopers, Resident Evil, and 28 Days Later. Probably the first series I've seen which really fits the bill of the "horror" genre. In general, this is a series with a LOT of gore. I considered comparing it to Berserk, but Berserk is more human/swords type gore. Blue Gender is just insane amounts of giant bugs getting killed, and/or humans getting torn apart by the bugs. Lots of body parts/internal organs... and not cheesy by any means, mind you. Science fiction at its best, with a truly bleak/frightening flair. The series does change its feel from horror to sci fi/action around the mid point, but both halves are still fantastic. Animation: Very well done. Not as good as, say, WHR, or most really new series (as it is from 1999), but still decent. Similar to Scrapped Princess, I'd say. Character designs were a bit different than the norm. Fantastic visuals involving the mecha they fought in, and in general, the giant bugs. Even the gore never crossed the line from well done to funny. Beautiful scenes of the earth occasionally were shown, with hillsides and sunsets. Music: Hauntingly beautiful. In general, the music was good and in the background.. especially useful for the barrage of horror and death being thrown at you. Once the series gets going, though, there is one particular melody which is quite haunting. It features a woman's voice singing a tune without words. Occasionally there were some fairly odd sound effects, like the THX sound... or various sounds from games (I recognized the door sound from Xenosaga, and a few sounds from Command and Conquer). Overall: 10/10 Another rare perfect score. This is easily one of my favorite series of all time. Everything about this series is just amazing. From episode 1, I was hooked. As mentioned before, this is definitely a series which fits into the genre of horror. Keeping this in mind, death and sadness run rampant. Unlike series like Sai Kano which throw depression in your face, it comes naturally to Blue Gender. For fans of a deeper plot, be reassured! Blue Gender has several major plot twists which will keep you guessing, and surprise you. There is an underlying love story as well. But, in general, this movie is about man-eating bugs, which might be more than they seem. A must see by any means. Plot, animation, music, and story.. this series has it all. Check it out. i thought it was alright, but i wound up not watching past 13 or 14 episodes(friend of mine quit buying the dvds) so i dunno about the story, but the rest of it was pretty good, just not perfect in my opinion.
(and am i the only one that noticed the mouths of the giant bugs all seemed to look like vaginas? maybe i was just tired...) |

they REALLY did look like vaginas ;)
but, the bugs change a lot during the series, and the ones in the last half mostly dont have those kind of mouths at all. the plot past 13/14 definitely changes, becomes more sci/fi instead of horror. i think both halves are great! ^_^

pretty good review, I managed to catch about half of this series on cartoon network *SHAME* I know, but I did like most of what I saw. The love story I think is what I enjoyed the most, Marlene is a kick ass woman who knows how to take charge, use force, and get done what needs to get done, yet she has a soft heart and a weakness for Yuji...now if only they'd do something about that boy's haircut... however, her passion for him was really admireable (about as admireable as a fictionated/animated character can be) and is mostly what helped me stomach the series .....dubbed.... although the job wasn't entirely bad and had some strong points, I did love the series on the whole and would love to see it again in it's original form...
Loved your review, but I'm always in the principle that nothing can earn a 10...there are always elements that I feel every series could improve apon, no matter how much I love the series... but I guess what one might find insufficient another would find satisfactory...beauty is in the eye of the beholder ne? |

Story:
The story was a tad lacking for me it was all around easy to fallow but I would have liked to seen some more depth to the idea it flowed to easy for my liking. I remember thinking when is it going to get complex Animation: Personally I kind of liked it for some odd reason it was well drawn kind of reminded me of Armitage The Third. The girl was a dead look alike but with 2 pony’s. The fight since were done well good action movement with the mechs. Color balance was ok nothing real special there. Music: No comments I would have to watch it again. Overall: Now don’t get me wrong I own this lol. So I would recommend you watching it and maybe picking it up. True it is a heavy love story but that is ok action is there enough and you get to see some good screwed up thinking by dumb char :) I would also not call them man eating they are more a cleaning crew for allot of things not just man but what man has become. |

I'm only at the start of disk 3 here, but so far it just plain freaking amazing.
So far its a pretty simple story - less complex than most animes of this nature dispite it being the Gasaraki director! Bear in mind though - its a survival story, not Gasaraki. Animation is its only weakness - but the art really makes up for it. About on par with Beserk. If Beserk doesnt bother you than you're fine. The characterizations and story make up for it - just like Berserk. And... I've never seen a show more uncompromisingly brutal without stooping to parody. Its a dead serious, ruthlessly harsh show. Did I mention ruthless? I DO mean ruthless. This is not really a spoiler but I'll use tags anyway in case you want to know NOTHING about the plot: Finally, I LOVE the dolby 2.0 on these disks. The low end frequency response is huge. In addition to a sub woofer I've got a pair of Aura Pro Bass Shakers on my seating with a 50Hz low pass filter and I'm getting ALOT of response. Rairly does anime have activity below 50Hz!!! |

I love this series.
Awesome action, drama, conflict, development, mecha, plot, character designs, and animation all in one excellent 26-episode package. I also got the movie adaptation of the TV series, and I am not at all dissappointed.
