I dropped this show at one episode because I thought it was literately retarded. This is my opinion whether it is valid or not. I believe opinions are allowed in this reviews section because that it what a review is; however, their validity must be defined. So in the future, I will request that partial reviews be identified as such. I don't believe it is necessary to watch all of something to have a valid view of it. However, I do believe it is necessary to tell people where your view is coming from.

I don't know whether this constitutes a personal opinion that should be sent via PM, but I've found that dropping a series after the first episodes to be a big mistake.

It turns away from its "retardation" near the end of episode one, as the serious plot emerges. May I also say that the plot is extremely dark and some parts are truly twisted?

Yep,

Higurashi is actually based of a series of Japanese murder mystery dojin soft visual novel, and it follows the games plot line.
Which gives it its strange format as it is based off of several interconnecting game arcs that are from separate games
Its going to end up being a 50 episode anime after the Airing of
Higurashi no naku koro ni kai (second season) is complete.

A live action movie adaptation of the series, to be directed by Ataru Oikawa, has been announced for 2008 as well. The movie will be an adaptation of the first story arc, Onikakushi-hen. Gōki Maeda will play Keiichi, Airi Matsuyama will play Rena, Rin Asuka will play Mion, Aika will play Rika, and Erena Ono will play Satoko.

I've watched up to episode 17 of Kai (Second season) and it is going very well.
Don't be misguided by the first episodes, even though I kinda liked the first episodes, there are many animes that open up so many questions and never close them. Thats something Higurashi doesn't do, in the end everything is explained even though the story seems bizarre and hard to follow, it will all make sense in the end. I like the show all the way through but I can see why some people could misjudge the show very easily.
Anyways, thats everything I have to say. I should probably write a review for this anime shouldn't I. Maybe I will tomorrow. (Day Off (Kinda, I still have schoolies but no work or homework.)^^)

I have to agree with some people here. This is a series I dropped after two episodes, simply because I had other animes to watch and this one wasn't quite what I was looking for. The groundwork for the story simply didn't intrigue me.

I might try to pick this up again at a later date, but that probably depends what else I find to watch in my free time.

SPOILER TAGS GODDAMMIT, I don't take kindly to people spoiling a show I want to watch.

Tenniskid: Definitely, add spoiler tags.

IceJamez: I know you may consider some of those things general knowledge, but it is always best to err on the side of caution. Anything remotely detailed about the plot that someone might not know going into the show should be put into tags.

edit: Nevermind, been given permission to just add them myself :P Please do use tags in the future though.

A problem I've found with the shows unorthodox structure, what with the second series being so similarly titled, was that I downloaded episodes of ...kai instead of the first season by mistake and didn't realise until I'd watched two of them. Anyone else done this?
