Well whenever you do an aggregate count of a bunch of people's tastes you're going to end up with certain shows that take a lot of the categories. That's really no big surprise (happens all the time in other places, especially since most people haven't seen all the shows but most people have seen a certain group of them). That's why I did the individual lists since you can see what each person would have picked; it's more interesting that way. It's rather easy to predict which shows would take a lot of votes in a group.

The best of 2008 (aired/theater, not licensed released)
The other best of 2008

Actually I'm a bit surprised Spicy Wolf and Ledouche didn't win more. ;p

Upon seeing the Best Animation category, this was my very vocal reaction alone infront of my PC:

"OH YOU ARE FUCKING KIDDING ME! YOU ARE FUCKING FUCKING KIDDING ME!"

Honestly, do people have eyes? Yes, those two mushy things in the front of your head. Code Geass R2, with its ordinary character designs, uninteresting backgrounds, and average action scenes = best animation? Best ANIMATION? I need to lie down.

Luckily, that abominable win was counteracted nicely by Kaiba taking the Best Sci-Fi. TWO THUMBS UP! In my view, that and Kaiji were the real deserving stars of these awards. On the whole, I leave fairly satisfied, and thanks to Cetonis & Co for all the hard work! Looking forward to seeing what the next year brings. ^_^

I'm pretty happy with the results. Sure, some stuff I hoped not to win did, but two of my favourites took home a lion's share of the awards (Kaiji and Spice and Wolf); and two of my others got deserving wins in their respective fields.

Some stuff that I didn't much care for also got awards I felt were pretty deserving - Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei isn't a good show, really, but even I gave it a best full cast vote so kudos.

Incidentally:

Not that I'm complaining (BELIEVE ME I'M NOT) but how did you make the call between these two?

Edit: Vivis, didn't you say Spice and Wolf was largely forgotten? Bwahahahahahahaha.

I know. I think I projected my own thoughts onto the rest of the world. I enjoyed that show at the time, but with hindsight I find it pretty unmemorable. Horo did deserve best female, but Best Overall? No.

Ties were given to the series with the lower watch count. RE had over 1,000 while La Maison had... 80. So there you go -.-'

Random personal thoughts:

- I had kinda pegged Spice and Wolf as the most likely winner from the outset. It's the sort of wide-appeal series where most people who watch it really enjoy it, but usually not quite as much so as something else more aligned to their particualr tastes. As such, even if it got few first-place votes it would likely appear somewhere in the top 5 of the majority of those who saw it. Which, given the love-hate nature of CGR2 and general great-but-not-outstanding impression of Clannad, would presumably be good enough as there weren't any heavily popular anime besides the two aforementioned. It was something of a "compromise" candidate, and I'm glad it won over something with a limited but fanatical following.

- In terms of actual category winners, I can't say there were too many surprises in terms of what I thought had a realistic shot. The ones that were kinda surprising were Kaiba not winning Setting, Zoku upsetting Clannad on Full Cast, and Ga-Rei somehow coming up short in Action.

- Never saw xxxHolic: Kei coming. It may not have won anything, but it was competing all over the place. Might have to go check that franchise out.

- I liked Hyakko a lot, but anything starting with "Aria" failing to win a slice-of-life award is a travesty :P I know we have at least some people on here who like pure SoL, why haven't they watched the Aria series yet...?

- I think I'm tougher on Kaiba and Kaiji than I really should be -.-' Probably some sort of reflexive response to the worship they get when I'm one of those folk who "merely" thought they were great. Well, I am among the crowd that was mildly disappointed with Kaiba's second half, so I have an actual reason there. Not so much with Kaiji, save for nitpicking the animation. (I like my generic unartisitc KyoAni trash, so sue me) Should probably 8.5 it and get it onto my top list.

- More people need to watch Shigofumi. Not saying it's for everyone, but should work for fans of Kino if nothing else.

So am I, truthfully. Didn't stop me from voting for it all over the place.

You know, I hate KyoAni buckets, their aesthetic style is distressingly ugly... but they're really, really good at animating that crap. Definitely better than what Kaiji featured. I'll give them that, ok? I might have even been forced to vote for something like Clannad for best animation but fortunately I hadn't seen it.

Yeah, if I had seen closer to the amount of series you did I probably would have too. As it is, Kaiba was about my 10th favorite out of like 40, so I only really got votes in for it in Scifi, Music and Setting.

If kaiba was 10th, what was 9th-1st for you Cetonis? I mean, Aria, Shion and Shigofumi I can understand, but then what? Spice and Wolf, Clannad, Code Geass, Hyakko, ZSZS, Hidamari Sketch, gunslinger girl S2, kannagi, bamboo blade, kaiji... and whatever else. I mean, I find it hard to believe that all but 3 of those are better then Kaiba in your opinion.

Sorry, I'm still on Kaiba high so I think I'm a little emotional about it ><. I'm just wondering what 9 anime could possibly have been better then it 2008.

Aria not winning SoL is a travesty and Ghost Hound losing to Shion (which was bleh) in mystery and to Kurozuka (which was just plain crap) was disappointing as well. Although I wasn't very suprised that Shion beat Ghost Hound since GH had a weak ending and alot of people seem to love Shion for some unexplainable reason.
