It seems to be there to show which characters are not supporting characters. Imagine how long the list would be if he had to mark all of the supporting chars.

Ah, I see. Of course, it's the series that wins the award, so I guess it doesn't matter that we all vote for different characters. Thanks.

Supporting: the leads list is there to know who not to vote for. You do pick a character, (that is not on that list) and they are counted by individual character. It just wasn't feasible to list them all. I'll try and clarify this in the threads.

Rant: hmm, I'm just going to try stuff.

Let's say we have a 1-hour comedy movie and a 10-hour comedy series. Some viewer sees both, and finds the movie to be very funny for the full hour. The series, well, it was also very funny for the first 2 hours, then reasonably amusing for the next 5, and merely okay for the rest. If he or she were asked "which is the better comedy?" there are numerous ways go about it:

- The movie was very funny the entire time, while the series tapered off; therefore the movie is better.
- The movie only provided one hour of entertainment, while the series was just as entertaining for just as long and provided extra entertainment on top of that. Therefore, the series is better.
- Viewer could attempt to extrapolate the movie out to 10 hours, and try to decide if that plot, with those characters and humor style, etc. would have been able to be better over that span of time than the series would have.
- Viewer could pick the best 1 hour segment of the series, and compare that to the movie.
- Viewer could pick out the best moments of the series totaling roughly an hout and compare using that.
- Viewer could just say the question cannot be answered.
- Viewer could try and employ some combination of these things in some kind of awkward weighted system.
- Viewer could go with "the gut," which more than likely is subconsciously predisposed to one of the above.

Even if some might seem more reasonable to you or me, or some of them outright silly, really none of these is any more right or wrong than the other, because it's all up to individual interpretation. Putting it out there and expecting some sort of consistent basis for comparison amongst the public would be silly, and in a sense would somewhat randomize the results depending on which philosophies turned out to be more prevalent.

Of course, we could just say the heck with it, who cares about all that, and put it all out there and let all the various interpretations mix and see what comes out. But (1) chances are this very debate of how to compare the two will come up and cause a healthy degree of drama that could have been avoided. (2) When the results do come out, some group is going to be irritated with the other(s) for skewing the votes in a way they percieve to be unfair. If the better or more popular short watches beat out the better or more tv series in a bunch of categories, those who compare them in a way that tends to favor series will be annoyed at those that tend to favor short watches. Vice versa if the short watches are in there and just get trounced. If they're left out of most categories to begin with, the worst thing that happens is those that favor the movies are annoyed with the system but can't really take issue with the voting that happens within it.

It would be a legitimate difference of opinion, using the word 'randomize' connotes that there's some sort of problem with people using different methodologies (however silly) and arriving at different reasons (which they're doing anyway right now). This is really just a breakdown of what happens in the voting process and if we have a problem with that... why have these votes at all?

I won't take issue with the voting, honestly. I know if La Maison en Petits Cubes is, say, put in the drama category I alone will vote for it. I'm cool with that, I'm an adult, and I'm sure most other people are too.

I see your point, but a lot of people could very well recognize their interpretations of how to compare things as simple logic, and not opinion. Do we care about those people? Do we decide they'll just have to deal with it? It's hard to say, I mean there's no way everyone's going to be happy no matter what we do, so what's the best way to minimize it? Are the objections of you, vivi and a few others about short watches being left out worse than potential backlash from any people out there who don't feel they should be allowed to win against full-length series? How many such people are out there? Should we care? It's very complicated.

But, I guess we won't really know unless we try it. Worst case scenario we do it differently next time. Been talking with sothis, we're gonna go ahead and open it all up, save for animation, and best series. (keep it literal) The genre placements may be imperfect as it's being done with no consulting, but we'll do what we can.

Yeah, that tag should also be added. I was remiss there.

Wow Cetonis lots of work put into this! I would like to just say thanks for bringing such and event to A-P :P

Going through each of the categories took a lot longer than I originally thought it would. It was pretty cool going back through past series and really having to think about how to vote for them.

I'm obviously happy that the votes are being opened up, and the distinctions are for rational reasons now.

Thanks, Cetonis, for at least giving it a go. I honestly don't think there'll be any objections.
