Not that I ever had enough imagination to create something anyway, but I have some crappy Ulead Gif Animator installed, it's way too picky on video formats and.. I just don't like it >.>

Initially, I was searching for an automated method like you, but I soon learned that to make a decent one, keeping the requied size, complete control of frames is needed.
So, I ended up using [ALT-I] in mpc, saving all the frames myself, and then assembling the animation in Photoshop. Not the easiest way around, but the most effective.
