The original pilot went in that slice of life, much more light heart-ed, direction than the actual film does. The pilot almost feels like an entirely different movie.
I'd say his sudden change after meeting Riquinni isn't all that unbelievable. Men do stupid and silly shit because of, and for, women.
But I will agree the films over all story is not as good as it could have been, nor is it it's strongest point. If it was given more time, as if it were an OVA at the least, the story would be able to include more information to better explain why this or that happens or why and how a character's personality would change so quickly. But then it probably wouldn't have the animation quality that it does. After seeing it on BD, I'd say it's animation is one the movie's strongest point. It looks great in HD and I think it's one of the finest examples of what can be done with cel animation.
