I've never used AVG, but it's fast and good, certainly. Only time it processor hogs is when updating the program/database, and you can turn auto updates off, so long as you can remember to update it every now and then yourself.
Also, you can set it to run virus scans whenever your screensaver comes up, which is handy for obvious reasons.
