This is from memory, so forgive me if this is just completely off base. However, I believe the rationale I came up with at the time was that he was sick of his life, pure and simple. He has been so worn down by the day-to-day drudgery of a full-time job that he starts idealizing the simplicity and purity of his youth. The nostalgia regarding his mother just helps solidify this.
