I don't see how they could do it, really. Plus, the anime's story was so much better than the manga I'd hate to see it sullied.
An FMA prequel would be ridiculous and far fetched. A sequel might be okay- but would have to be extremely well done and fit in w/ the series/movie instead of being a 'let's cash in on this' extra, irrelevant Elric bros. adventure. That said, I think it could be done- I love the characters and would like to see them continue to grow up.
edit: On second thought- nah- they should just leave well enough alone.
