It seems to briefly slow or stop time so that he can reposition his shield. While being a great defense, his dps as a tank will be quite low so I wouldn't expect any boss killing out of him. That's what strait damage dealers like Kirito are for. The only reason he was able to win vs Kirito is that he has the best guild in the game feeding him levels and gear.

If you have ever played something like RF online then you know guild leaders have stacked ass gear, because the guild will farm rare monsters and then distribute the drops with the leader getting a healthy cut.

What i think of the special skills is

that they are awarded to certain players who have done something better then everyone, like the leader of the guild is the highest level or maybe because he might have taken the least amount of damage throughout the 2 years of the game. As kirito maybe has the fastest attack speed or has done the most damage over time.

or i could be dead wrong, who knows?
