I miss it too, and I think I used it more frequently than I did the General Anime Discussion at some point, but apparently it wasn't that used. I take it by the lack of reaction (and by that, I mean you are the only other person who has openly said they missed it), that's very true.

But if you think about it, the merger isn't exactly nonsensical. It just means more debating will go on in one place; people who used the 'General Anime Discussion' section a lot might also feel more prone to read/partake in discussions of current stuff now that the two are merged.
