I apparently never experienced what everyone else did. Yuri didn't seem like a main character to me, even if she was the leader of the Battlefront. She generally annoyed. I love this anime; it's one of my favorites. I loved most of the characters, she just wasn't one of them.
When I first saw Yuri, She did look like Haruhi Suzumiya by a lot. but I still love this character. Her story was painful, I would be devasted if that ever happen to my younger siblings. she's very strong willed and admirable. I would love to get to know how she died but still it tugs at my heartstrings of what she went through.
Yuri is probably my all time favorite anime female character. I know a lot of people call her a Haruhi Suzumiya expy due to her appearance, they could not be farther from the truth. Yes, they are both leaders of somewhat eccentric organizations. But unlike Haruhi, Yuri is caring and protective of her teammates. She is willing to even second guess herself as a leader when she fails them. She goes out of her way to help Otonashi regain his memories, something Haruhi would probably not even think of. And she is able to reflect on her actions and learn from them. She is funny but also a compelling character and I wish Angel Beats was longer so I could have seen more of her. Although I was disappointed that she did not get paired up with Otonashi or Hinata, I am kind of glad that she was able to stand on her own without a love story. Anime needs more characters like Yuri.
So many say she is like Haruhi...But why I love her while dislike Haruhi...
Yuri isn't like Haruhi Suzumiya. They both are leaders, have a lot of energy, look similar and also yell a lot, but like SHandley already said - Yuri is caring, protective, tought, smart, mature and is the leader everyone respect. She deeply cared about the souls stucked in the "afterlife" world and she worked really hard to save them. Would Haruhi do that? I don't think so. Haruhi is a contrast to Yuri.
