Shinji IKARI main image

Shinji is the pilot of Evangelion Unit 01. Deeply disturbed, he often attempts to run from his problems. Despite this, he has unusually high synch rates with Unit 01, even when he is forced to pilot it with no previous training. Shinji's mother died when he was very young, leaving him with his father, Gendo Ikari. Due to feelings of abandonment as a young child and Gendo's very cold demeanor, Shinji feels a certain amount of malice towards his dad. Fighting his inner demons, he also is very impacted by Gendo's occasional praise and continually seeks his acceptance.

If I were put in his shoes, let's face it, I'll probably be whining and screaming like a little bitch at that age too. Especially after everything he's been put through. First and foremost, Evangelion was never about a badass guy kicking alien asses anyway. It's about a bunch of kids forced to become killing machines and deprived of any normal childhood. What they did with him running away from his problems is fully legit and any other way, it won't feel right and the show will be nowhere as good. I don't blame Shinji for any of his running away or crying or whatnot. If anything, I blame his father. Take a look at the alternate world short clip at the end, Shinji and the others would have had a very different childhood and upbringing resulting in a different personality. But no, he cries and runs away in the show because that's how he's supposed to act based on his background. All in all, it's again a well written, 3 dimensional, realistic character and exactly what is needed for the entire series to work. I'd hate on a character if he's overrated, overly perfect, inconsistent and falls flat, but in this case I think the producers succeeded in what they were going for.

I did not hate this character as much as I thought was going to. Yeah you feel like asphyxiating him when he runs away from his problems and doesn't face them head on but other than that, he isn't terrible.

One of the deepest, if not the best written anime protagonist (Only Lelouch, Edward Elric, and Spike Spiegel come close).

Okay people, let's think here for a second. Crappy childhood? Check. Forced into a life or death situation? Check? And he is only 14. Yes, he is 14. I believe that his actions are justified becuase of this. Because not every main character has to be a gung-ho badass.

How can anyone hate this kid? He is the most realistic anime character I've ever seen. Sure you might be annoyed that he is a coward but that's exactly how any 14 year old would act when his father abandons/ignores him, his mother passes away before he had any chance to remember her face, and the fate of the world rest on his shoulders.
