Enishi is Tomoe's younger brother, whose mother died with his birth. Tomoe raised Enishi herself, filling the role of both older sister and mothe. Enishi was very attached to his big sister, following her everywhere, riding on her shoulders and smiling only for her. Enishi was very jealous of anyone else's affections toward Tomoe, particularly one of her childhood friends, Kiyosato Akira, the second son of a neighboring samurai family.
When Tomoe entered her teens, she became engaged to Akira. When Enishi heard this, he threw a howling fit that caused Tomoe to feel guilty about her engagement to the young swordsman. When Akira put off his engagement and went off to the war, Enishi believed he would have his sister to himself again.
When word came of Akira's death in the war, Tomoe shut down emotionally and no longer interacted with Enishi, only sitting in her room, weeping silently. Enishi did his best to try to cheer Tomoe up, but nothing seemed to work. One day, Enishi found that Tomoe had left without so much as a goodbye to him. Enishi set out to Kyoto in the hope of bringing his sister home with him.
