In the director's commentary, we hear Ellis described as possibly having "mild Asperger's syndrome", and as someone with AS, I agree. She definitely behaves in ways typical of someone with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Somewhat emotionally detatched, socially inept, etc...I love her so much because I can identify with her so strongly as a protagonist. I definitely enjoyed watching her (slowly) come out of her shell and relate more and more to Nadia as their friendship begins to bloom...girl has had a lot of pain and suffering in her life, and Nadia is the one friend she can count on. If you like Ellis, you may also like Tamaki from Bamboo Blade.
