A girl destinied to become a saviour of earth.... a spirit able to embrace everything.. Just like Ai the girl in this series can turn into a magical spirit who can protect everything from disaster. A story about a world colapsing because of the human race. And just like Ai the girl Juna in this series wants to protect her loved ones and has to see the meaning of life. This is truly a must see if you liked I wish.
TheBurningCrow
Both I Wish you Were Here and Earth Girl Arjuna focus on the bonds of love and the power that one person can possess to save the world. Each has a girl, who is the lead candidate for saving the earth from certain doom.
sothis
Yet another series about Earth's reaction to humans overstepping their bounds, and the consequences/death/transformation it does to its inhabitants. Both "i wish you were here" and "Earth Girl Arjuna" manage to tell a gripping and dramatic story with beautiful animation, and flair. A must see.

When the one you hold close turns out to be a secret weapon what would you do? Would you still like to hold her close and be able to see her as a normal person? Just like Yuuji and Ai are a couple ruined because of the girl being a secret weapon. But unlike from "I wish.." Saikanon more circulate around the whole weapon thing and the war. And somtimes Saikano feels abit less grownup than I wish... But both are really good series. Sakano can even be abit wicked, since there is alot of thinking in it. But be sure to check it out... it's absolutely... the last love story on the planet...
Temsik

The starting point is the same for both of the stories - she is the ultimate weapon. If I had to choose, I'd say Zaion was better - at least, it doesn't have that "let's get laid" attitude which drove me crazy in Saikano.

Blue Gender

Blue Gender main image

In the early 21st century, certain people are exhibiting signs of B-cell growth, a condition that is incurable. Yuji is one of these, who chooses to become a "Sleeper" -- a person who is put into stasis until a cure can be found. The tranquillity of Yuji's sleep is interrupted 15 years in the future, in a very different world. Giant bugs known as Blue have invaded the Earth, eating its resources, and.. human beings. Now all Yuji can do is escape through the city with the ones who saved him from his inevitable death, towards Second Earth... mankind's new home in space.

Besides the fact that in the beginning of Blue Gender, the main characters friend strikes an awefully close resemblance to the main character of I wish you were here... The idea of some mutated lifeform taking over the earth and trying to kill off all of mankind are rather similar. Also, the animation is fairly similar and there is a girl in each series that ends up saving the main character from his demise, but I'll let you figure that one out.

Both of these series contain a heroine, who is able to save the world, and her love. "i wish you were here" and "Blue Gender" both have a male lead character, who forcefully changes into something... mutant.. by the will of the Earth. In general, these series both touch on the issues of the world perhaps coming to an end, and are both excellent in general.

Blue Sub #6 and I wish you were here both deal with mutant species which are trying to be controlled. I don't really have a better way of explaining why I chose these two series, I just think they had a very similar feel.

Voices of a Distant Star

Alt titles: Hoshi no Koe

Voices of a Distant Star main image

Nagamine is a young high school student who lives a fairly typical teenage life: hanging out with friends, attending class, and falling in love with a wonderful boy. But when she enlists in the galactic army, who is desperate for candidates to fight an alien war, she finds herself drifting farther away from her first love, Noboru. In the depths of space, where a simple email takes eight years to be delivered, will their love truly flourish, or simply fade away?

Hoshi no Koe hits the same themes as Zaoin, but does it much, much better. The psuedo-romance is more believable, sweeter, and more complex. The characters have more depth. Voices of a Distant Start does everying Zaoin tries to do, better, in a quarter the time.
