Gekigangar 3

Gekigangar 3

Ancient cave paintings left by the Super Paleolithic people tell of a great disaster befalling the people of Earth, when the evil Kyokka space empire will come to destroy all that we know and love. Humanity’s only chance lies in the prehistoric schematics for a super battle robot called Gekigangar 3! But even such a weapon is futile if there is not courage, love, and friendship among the brave humans fighting for peace and freedom! At least that’s what the crew of the Nadesico cruiser expect when they go to see the Gekigangar 3 marathon at the theatre…

Not only do the Z-Mind and Gekigangar robots look remarkably similar - probably both down to having common ancestors in 70s mecha, but both aim to present a comic take on some of the extremes of the genre. While Gekigangar is an anime within an anime, so you may want to Nadesico first, if you enjoy the part parody, part homage to the mecha genre's colourful past, you're bound to enjoy both.

Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman

Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman

When Hiroya Matsumoto joined the Right Trading Company, he never thought he'd be anything more than a regular employee. But as it goes, he became the fifth member of a superhero team called the Shinesman. The Shinesman's mission is to defend the Earth against enemies from the Planet Voice. But amidst all this, Hiroya also has to look after his little brother, make a living, and do his superhero jobs clad in lame suits and equipped with equally lame weapons such as business cards! Can the Shinesman succeed in the face of utter comedy... I mean... terror?!

Shinesman and Z-Mind both seem as much pastiche as parody, simultaneously mocking the genre conventions and at times sticking rather too close to them. However, while many of the cheaper shots fail to hit home, both have a few very clever jokes - the alter egos of the superheros in Shinesman are named after the seiyuu that play the roles, or Renge's attempt in Z-Mind to give her mecha a more exciting name. Though you may have to have watched quite a lot of old anime to get all the references here, if can appreciate one, the other should appeal too.
