Pandora Hearts

Pandora Hearts

On the eve of nobleman Oz Bezarius's fifteenth birthday, he and his loved ones gather to celebrate in a coming-of-age ceremony. But after Oz steps under a long-stopped clock and the hands finally move once more - thus fulfilling a mysterious prophecy - he is violently thrown into the legendary prison known as the Abyss by three cloaked intruders. Existing in another dimension, the Abyss is home to lifeforms born within its walls known as Chains; these beings can only live in the real world if they make contracts with humans, binding their power to the person's body. However, there's a catch - in time, the human will be overcome by the Chain's power and then thrown into the deepest level of the Abyss. When Oz wakes up in the Abyss he is quickly attacked by hungry Chains, only to be saved by one named Alice - a Chain who appeared just before he was thrown into the prison. Together, the two make a contract and return to the real world, where they are enlisted into the Pandora organization - a group researching both the Abyss and the trio that threw Oz into it.  Along with members of Pandora, the duo searches to find Alice's lost memory fragments that are scattered throughout the world, to discover the secrets of the Abyss, and to determine if there's a way their contract can be broken without killing either Oz or Alice.

Both titles revolve around the mysterious female being who lost her memories.  Merry is a Dream Demon and Alice is a Chain, both need human counterparts to sustain them. The two characters are similar in personality as well.  If you like the mystery and supernatural elements of one then you will definitely like the other.

Both feature butt-kicking female protagonists and a rather otherworldly feel. Bits of comedy lighten the tension between trips between two worlds and some well animated combat. If you liked one, be sure to try the other.

Both series feature the not so average male lead who partners up with a girl who is from another dimension to fight monsters that are also from that other dimension.  Though in the case of Yumekui Merry the denizens of that other dimension are known as dream demons and in Pandora Hearts they are known as chains.  With a good mixture of action, comedy, and mystery I'm pretty sure that if you liked one then you may like the other.

A girl from another world besides our own enters this world tied to a guy. In both anime, more bad guys from the other world try to outdo the girl./boy pair. Recipe for awesomeness

Yumekui Merry and Pandora Hearts have two main, strong female characters with strikingly similar personalities.  The series are filled with mystery and a wonderful supernatural aspect.

First of all these are both very good animes and very similar in many ways...such as characters I always thought Alice was a bit like Merry in personality, maybe Yumeji = Oz? Well anyway  both are fantasy animes and the story is around the idea of demons in the human world (in a way), even though Pandora Hearts is set in a more old-fashion setting compared to Yumekui Merry, if you liked one you should like the other!

Shakugan no Shana

Shakugan no Shana

Sakai Yuuji thought he was a normal high school student, until one fateful day when time stopped. Watching in horror, he witnesses a monster devouring the "frozen" people around him; but luckily for Yuuji, he is saved by a sword-wielding red-headed girl that calls herself a "Flame Haze". The girl informs him that he has been dead for some time now and that his current self is merely a replacement for the human that he used be while alive. He is, she says, merely a torch whose life will come to an end when the blue flame in his chest ceases to burn. After this rude awakening, Yuuji realizes that he is able to see the flames of life in other "torches"; and after discovering that a friend of his is also a torch -- and her life is burning out faster than his – he gains the courage to live out the rest of his life with meaning. Will Yuuji be able to find his place in the world before he ceases to exist?

Very similar plots, boy meets girl with powers who fights a 'strange' enemy who creates little barrier worlds to fight in. Boy becomes stronger from training and his growing relationships with the characters and the mysterious girl. If you like one you will like the other.

Shana and Merry both have unusual plot, battle_in_underworld theme, eyecandy chardis, and ordinary japanese schoolboy as a ballast. They are very simmilar if you think, but they somehow have no association with each other when you look at it.

Both anime involve another world besides the world we know. From both worlds spawns a girl with some powers to fight somebad guys. Both anime involve an almost completely useless dude. Recipe for awesomeness.

Both of these animes are pretty similar in a lot of ways. They both portray a female lead with a male support, have a lot of fighting, demons, ect. They also frequently visit realms outside of reality to do their fighting (closed space versus dream world) and return to the real world afterwords. Yukmekui has many more protagonists and has a more intense feel than Shakugan, but otherwise they have a lot in common. The two main females are similar too; both are very independant and don't open up at first to new characters and are the main fighters of the story, though Merry does become quite freindly further into the story, where "Shana" is fairly stubborn all the way through, at least on the outside.

Yumekui feels much more rushed as it is squished into 13 episodes. where Shakugan has more time for character development. Without any spoilers it's tough to say more than that. I reccomend them both.

AngelBeatsYui AngelBeatsYui says...

The storyline of these animes are pretty similar...a human boy meets a supernatural girl and get up into a bunch of situations, then the boy is different compared to other humans. Well another thing is that they are both in a modern setting with elements of fantasy which is very similar. So I believe if you liked one of these animes you would like the other!

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

One night, Madoka has a terrible nightmare – against the backdrop of a desolate landscape, she watches a magical girl battle a terrifying creature, and lose. The next day, the teen's dream becomes reality when the girl – Homura – arrives at Mitakihara Middle School as a transfer student, mysteriously warning Madoka to stay just the way she is. All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to fight witches that spread despair to the human world, and in return they will be granted a single wish. If you like either, the other would be worth looking into, as they both deal with mature ideas; Madoka Magic's true look at what it means to be a "magical girl", and Yumekui Merry's ideas about what it really means to die and how it effects people. Plus, both have awesome, unique art styles when the characters go to the "other worlds". They both have great animation as well- both are a real visual treat. I'd certainly try the other, if you liked one of them.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

Now while Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica may be a magical girl anime like the name implies and Yumekui Merry doesn't have a single magical girl in it both series still have some things in common.  In both cases they feature somewhat ordinary people who find themselves in circumstances that aren't so ordinary.  By which I mean they find themselves in battles against demons/witches.  Also in both cases when said battles occur the characters are pulled into alternate worlds that are unique to that demon/witch.  If you liked one then I'm sure you'll like the other.

NimirRa NimirRa says...

There's more to these magical girls than meets the eye. If you like your mahou shoujo a little less fluffy and with a definite dark streak then give the other one of these shows a try. You wont be disappointed!

Soul Eater and Yumekui Merry both have an oddly similar feel to it, although they are fairly different.

In Soul Eater, people turn into weapons to weapons and their partners use them to fight demon-like enemies.

In Yumekui Merry, Dream Demons need Vessels in order to exist in reality.

Here's where they start seeming kind of similar: In both series the Demons are drawn to/by the most powerful among them, and the main characters are partners which fight these demons in order to achieve their ambitions (like getting home, or becoming a Death-Scythe). Whenever something important happens in either of these series, they give off the feeling of it being partially distorted; like it isn't really happening, but you know for a fact that it is.

Soul Eater seems to focus on Action, Fighting, and Characters

Yumekui Merry seems to focus on the Storyline/Plot, and Characters.

All this may change soon enough (considering I'm writing this just after 6 episodes of Yumekui Merry first airing), but I do think that if you like one, you'll like the other.

i didn't think i would see the punk style of soul eater again but here it is, and in my opinion Dream Eater Merry is better in that field but soul eater is superior in the script department, worth watching both

Kurokami The Animation

Kurokami The Animation

Beyond the knowledge of most people, the world contains a dark secret: of every person in the world, there exist two identical copies (called Doppeliners) with the same body and mind. Among the three, however, is distributed only a finite amount of fortune; should they ever encounter one another, the one with a smaller portion dies and the remainder is distributed until only one, the Master Root, survives. Keita Ibuki lives his day-to-day life as ignorant of this as everyone else until he stumbles upon a mysterious young girl named Kuro who explains to him these secrets of the world. Despite not wanting to have anything to do with her or the danger that inevitably seems to follow, their fates become intertwined and he finds that the Doppeliner system has more to do with his past than he realizes.

Both series have a mysterious heroine with a strange goal, a boy who must follow her, many weak enemies, a lot of short fights and confusing storyline.

I don't know why, but when I was watching Yumekui Merry I was under the impression that it is awfully similar to Kurokami the Animation. It's possible that you too will feel the similarities.

The two series, Yumekui Merry and Kurokami the Animation, have the main theme of mystery.  The goals of the main characters are not revealed in their entirety until the end of the series.
